window falling off of the guide track...

my driver side window started messing up recently, took off the door panel to find the track the guides the window down was not connected to the window any more, the metal where it looked like it had once buttoned on is all old and cracked so the little thing wont go back in there....
is there a quick solution to this problem? i couldnt think of anything to do except buy a new window and hope that that i can get the button thing to snap into it. i was also considering getting someone to weld it together but it looks like it moved around so i dont know how well it would take to weld...

Drilling out the rivets will not break the window. It's a PITA, but not impossible.

Start by using a dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut off the rivet shafts that protrude from the rivet base. Cut them off flush, it will take several cutoff discs.

Next, use a small drill bit to make a pilot hole in the center of the rivet stem. You might need to gently tap a punch on it first to make a dimple for the drill bit to get a proper start.

Finally, use a large bit to follow the pilot hole and actually drill out the rivet.
Once all 3 rivets are out, the window will lift out.

To replace the broken rail you will need to next remove the window motor. Removing the motor allows you to manipulate the regulator mechanism by hand. Also remove the vertical guide at the rear of the door that has the broken off guide pin in it as well as the short horizontal track held in with 2 bolts. You should now be able to slide the scissor-guides from the track and remove the track. Now, put the replacement track in the door and slide the scissor guides into it. This is not easy because you will be fighting against the spring tension of the regulator. Be carefull not to injure yourself. Have a friend help, they can hold things in place for you. The next step is to reinstall the rear guide by first sliding the guide pin into it, then bolting it in place. Reinstall the short horizontal track. Reinstall the power window motor, the drop the glass back into the track. Use 3 stainless steel nylon ringed locknuts to hold it in place. Tighten them just snug, not to tight or the glass will break.

HERE is a video showing the movement of the window mechanism.

HERE is a picture of the door with the skin removed

HERE is a picture of the mechanism parts removed

HERE ia a picture of the hardware

HERE is another one of the hardware installed in the glass and track.

It will likely be necessay to adjust the window for proper seal after you do this. Shoebox has instructions on his website that are great for that.

I took my door pannel off and the wheel had pulled right out of the metal on the door bracket. It didnt sheer so I think I will cut the end of the peice of metal that is built onto the wheel and tack weld it back onto the main bracket.

Tht is a common one. A couple tack welds will have it as good as new
