Alright....so I get home from work after my 2 hour drive (BAD TRAFFIC....car ran unusually hot) and I get home, and discover after I go back into the garage that my driver's side exhaust hanger weld has given out and my exhaust is leaning very low on the driver's side of the muffler -- being supported by a combination of I-pipe and the tip on the other side pushing against something. No marks on the tip....nothing seems bent out of place, etc -- and I heard NO scraping at all, even coming in my inclined driveway leading me to believe that it came loose AS I came in the driveway or just while it was sitting there cooling down.

***Do you foresee any problems with the temp-rigged exhaust hanger below holding up until the weekend? (I can't miss work 7:30 to 4, I have about a 90 minute drive each way - mostly 45-55mph) -- I'm confident in it, but you never know what I may be overlooking. Thanks guys/gals!

=>if unclear - the primary source holding it is an extension cord piece wrapped where the hanger USED to be, and partiall aroud the fuel tank shield........if that fails, there is a metal loop made for hanging household pipes and the holes in that overlap and are tied with some 16 gauge speaker wire........that whole area is wrapped with electrical tape...mostly for a better appearance --------- the pipe with the single hanger is the passenger side - just in case...haha

the metal part is fine though

take the drop cord off, use a clothes hanger

 

Damn does it get that hot? I felt like it would put up with the heat.....looks like I'll be back under there soon then...

EDIT: One person saying it will melt is all I need -- I wasn't sure it would because I have touched it before -- didn't seem severe at all.. Will go all metal now..

 

i still wouldnt trust it. Have u ever tried touching your exhaust pipe? It gets extremely hot, why do u think it melts wires lol. Drop cord = no no. I would keep that metal part, and use 2 clothes hangers to wrap around there, and than i wuold feel safe about it

 

You'll be fine with that plumber's tape. I don't know how you have it fastened to itself...hopefully a small nut and bolt. If it's just taped together, it'll likely come apart. FWIW, I held my exhaust up with some small steel wire for a few days until I could get my new exhaust built. It did just fine.

 

yeah, take the cord off......coat hanger will be fine, I have had to do that before.

 

No - the tape was protecting/cosmetically enhancing the appearance. I was too lazy to use nuts/bolts on the galvanized steel wrap -- it was easier to get it tighter using 14 gauge wire in multiple places and looping it repetitively - knotting it, and then taping that up. I trusted that more than the nuts/bolts anyway because I could get 5 or 6 spots per wrap as opposed to one or two.

Anyways -- I would've been fine with the orange drop cord it appears. With the cutout open -- here were some exhaust temperatures I took at that location:

OPERATING TEMP
80*F ON the pipe at operating temperature
72*F ON the closest portion of electrical tape in the following pics

AFTER 10 MINS HARD DRIVING
92*F ON the pipe after 10 minutes of HARD running
78*F ON the closest portion of electrical tape in the following pics

The electrical tape can handle up to 176*F.
I heated the outer protective coating only of the drop cord in a microwave and read the temperature at 138*F - there was no melting.....though this was not a sustained temperature, it seemed unlikely to reach that touching the outer pipe surface...then again -- who knows once it's been running for an hour plus.

Whoever asked if I had touched the muffler area while/right after it was running -- yes I have, that's why I was under the impression it wasn't TOO hot there. (again, cutout)


(it may not look stable in some ways..but I assure you it is -- all of the angles are covered....and some look weird because I had to play with it to get the tips perfectly even with one another......the thin appearance of the galvanized steel is misleading as well)

anything white you see is clothes hanger -- one comes from a weird angle you cant see just to cover anything that could go wrong..

within that black electrical tape is a...."sophisticated" network of wire, galvanized steel, clothes hanger and spark plug wire (used to pull galvanized steel ends together to "lift" the pipe higher)...


NOW will I be fine until Saturday when I don't work? (or at least after Thursday when I get my paycheck) - even after I get the work done -- I will keep a clean looking loop of galvanized steel bolted together on each side -- good insurance....

I have seen a lot worse, looks like its time for some duals.

 

It looks like you emptied out every spare thing you had in the garage to fab that up. Don't think it is going to go anywhere on you. I had that bracket break on me as well that holds up the drivers side tailpipe. Luckily I have a welder at home, it made a quick fix for that.
