Why dont "off the shelf" chips work?

Why does everyone say the Hypertech/Jet etc..chips dont work? They are made for a specific vehicle with a specific motor and transmission, tested many times.I udnerstand every motor is different but within a degree, they are all the same and perform the same..Why does everyone hate these chips? Whats makes them so different from custom tuning?

They might work ok for a stock engined car, but once you start making other mods, the tune must be altered to reap the benefits. Since almost no one stops at a single mod, that makes the Hypertech approach pretty useless.
A custom tune can be just that-"custom" for your particular mods. Much better-and most often cheaper.

Well most of them say their made for vehicles with lower restriction intake and exhaust which are the primary mods of most people..

A custom tuner can make quick changes for you and also take advantage of the very latest ideas in tuning. You can't do that with a canned program in a Hypertech.

I have been running a Thermomaster on my '93 since '99, with the 160 thermostat... Stock engine with cat-back system, G2 intake, airfoil, and 3.42 gears.... No problems here.. But once I rebuild, I will have to get a custom tune chip......

Your spedometer is off if the 3.42s are not factory and you have not had the PCM tuned some how...As far as the hypertech chip there is no need to change the PCM tuning for a cat-back or cold air intake so there's really no need to buy it.
