Who has taken out fuel pump in vert with trap door method?
Who has taken out fuel pump in vert with trap door method?
Ok .I am pretty sure have a bad fuel pump. Who has taken out the pump in vert with trap door method? And yes I know it works fine in a hatchback but vert might be a bit different. I can drop the tank and do it the normal way but really think the door should have been put in at the factory like it is in my talons. I can do a talon fuel pump change in minutes ,there is no reason it should take hours to do my camaro pump.

an hour??
I'm looking in my manual. Says I have to remove the axl, and the mufler.Looks like a good Half hour right there.
But that is the correct way every one is talking about right??

Re: Who has taken out fuel pump in vert with trap door method?
I can have my rear end out and the tank on the floor in just about a hour on the money. Its not that hard. And if your gonna spend 250 or more on a pump, just upgrade and put a Walbro setup in it and never worry agian.
Re: Who has taken out fuel pump in vert with trap door method?
then another hour to get it all back together??
I'm going to go with the stock pump this time. I've already cut the whole, so if there is a next time, it won't be such an ordeal.
by the way, I used a 9 inch grinder with a cutting wheel. cut the whole in like 10 minutes, with one disc, and it's not even close to being worn.

Re: Who has taken out fuel pump in vert with trap door method?
Ok my thread is getting confusing..I just want to hear from guys that have done this on a vert not on a hardtop or t top. The vert might be a bit different and if I hear one more time about the right way I will throw up. Gm and other carmakers did many stupid things and not having an access hatch to get at intank pump is one of them. I have two talons and both have access hatches and changing fuel pumps in either of them is a simple ,easy ,pleasant install that can easily be done by home mechanic.
I also see no problem cutting thru the floor. you guys freak on this and yet weld on subframes and rollbars and do all sorts of things to your vehicles so what if you make a nice trapdoor. Now still haven't heard if its doable this way on a vert but I want to have that option . Sure I can do it the old fashioned way but sometimes a better way is not the old fashioned way. Not lets not hear any more about how this trap door is some kind of sin against nature. Gm messed up by not putting access in the hardtops and t tops. Maybe it can't work in a vert. Lets also remember gm put in garbage window motors, designed the optipuke ,is responsible for most lt1 cars getting the intake manifold leak etc. Gm is hardly all knowing or even smart on lots of their engineering but they do make kickass engines.

Re: Who has taken out fuel pump in vert with trap door method?
sorry 80TA, I did a search for trap door, because my pump just went out on my T-Top Z.
I had my car jacked up and ready to pull the shocks and got to thinking, there has got to be a better way. So I came on, searched fuel pumps, found trap door topics, searched for trap doors, found this thread.
I was a little worried about it, but I got the whole cut in like 10 minutes & didn't start any fires.
If I were you, I'd cut into the floor, and see if it works. If yur that worried, I'd drop the tank and take a look. If it looks fine, I'd go ahead and cut the fllor while I was there. If it's nothing but the thin sheet metal that I just cut out, I doubt it would do any serious damage.
