Whistling sound coming from engine?

I don't know how long this has been going on, but I opened the hood today with the engine on and heard a whistling (sucking maybe?) coming from the motor somewhere. Could this be from one of my EGR's gaskets from the intake or exhaust? That seemed to be where it was located (where the EGR pipe goes into the top of the head).

more of a squeeling?

possibly a old drive belt... or a wet one.

I'll 2nd that. Vacuum leak sounds like the problem. Check your hose connections into your manifold, also check your EGR gasket on your valve and make sure your bolts are tight.

Sorry, its a '99 Z28...

Definately not a belt.

How the hell do I check my hose connections into my manifold?

Do you have an aftermarket intake on the car? A vaccum leak is usually is followed by a rough idle. To find the vaccum leak you spray around all hoses and gaskets with gum cutter and when you spray a spot and the idle smooths out, then you found the leak. But if its that loud, and you dont have a rough idle, I doubt its a vaccum leak.

Re: Whistling sound coming from engine?

Everything is stock.

I don't think it has a rough idle....what happens sometimes though is when I come to a stop, the RPMs will dip to like 350 for half a second then go back up to the normal ~700 range and stay there. Also, my SES light is on and autozone tracked it down to the EGR valve....could this have something to do with it?

Re: Whistling sound coming from engine?

Take a piece of hose and use like a stethescope and move the end around to see if you can hear where the source is..
EGR has vacuum lines on it, and yes it could be that..
Should be an under hood sticker on the radiator support that shows all vacuum hoses, etc..
Check them all one could be broken or popped off etc..
