When do LT1's catch up?
When do LT1's catch up?
Hey guys I was just wondering when the LT1 catches up to the LS1. LIke what stage of modding. Cuz to my knowlegde when they are both maxed out they are really close....right?
Re: When do LT1's catch up?
Well, most good running LS1's will dyno between 290-300 rwhp I believe. To get this from a LT1, you need CAI, Headers, and catback(or cutout) like said earlier.

well, a cold air, shorty headers, off-road pipe, flow cat-back, BFG's, 2800 stall, shift kit,3.73 gear, and the free mods beat a stock LS1 on a Nitto by about 2 tenths. Loose the gear and the stall and it'll be up to the driver. Put a 150 shot on each of them and it gets a little closer. That's pretty cheap if you ask me. No more than $3K in parts...that's pretty good IMO.

Re: When do LT1's catch up?
When GM completely redesigned the 5.7L they did it with newer thinking in mind. They used a completely different Rod/Stroke length. New materials, a larger cam believe it or not, and of course better flowing everything. When the LS1 F-Body was released it was claimed to have the "Best flowing Y-Pipe ever on a stock vehicle"...even though it is crushed flat. The heads and intake both out flow the LT1 by leaps and bounds. As does the exhaust. Look at an engine as an air pump....more in = more out = More HP. Since the internals on the trannies and rearends are almost identical it's all in the motor. Wonderfull technology

BTW: according to your sig, you shouold do ok against an LS1 on similar tires/wheels... If he's on a Drag Radial your toast. But you should be able to hold your own against a stock!!! LS1

Re: When do LT1's catch up?
Exacatly, if you start modding the LS1 he's only going to move proportianally or further than you, mod for mod. You need to "out mod" the LS1 in order to beat him. An LT1 with the mods I stated above plus a 100 shot was on par with a stock LS1 on a 100 shot. And Now with a 150 shot the LT1 just runs away. It all depends on what the other car has as to if you'll beat him or not.

Re: When do LT1's catch up?
IMO, its depends on the type of racing you do. i agree that LS1s are a step ahead of the LT1, but in the 8th mile, there is a smaller gap between the cars. when i had my 94 z, it would consistently run 9.1 in the 8th mile when it was bone stock 6 speed. from what i have seen, most bone stock LS1s run 9.0 or so in the 8th. now, on to the quarter mile, my lt1 would run 14.1 at best, most stock LS1s run 13.4-13.6 bone stock. LS1s make up their power over the Lt1 in the upper rpm range due to a quicker revving, better flowing engine. and dont forget that the LS1 weighs approx 100 lb less than an LT1

Whoever spends the most money will win.
Both motors have more potential than you probably have money in your wallet. Its all about how much you want to spend. The LS1 just has a about a 50hp jump start on the LT1. There are cars out there with both motors running 9 second quartermiles. Money invested is the only limiting factor in making just about any car fast.
Just because the LT1 is older doesnt make it a POS not worthy of modding. There are plenty late 80's, early 90's 5.0 Stangs out there (just over 200hp stock) that can run with both cars, they just take quite a bit of modding to get there.
Its all in how much you want to spend dude.
