Wheels getting very hot
Wheels getting very hot
I noticed yesterday that my front wheels (C5 wheels) were to hot to even touch, and I can see where the clear coat is peeling from excessive heat.
My first thought was brakes sticking, but they don't seem to be....and I can't see both spindles going out at the same time.

Re: Wheels getting very hot
I guess this would all depend on the conditions. I hosed down my wheels after a short drive yesterday and there was steam coming off of them. the rotors get pretty hot, and the wheel is bolted onto that. heat transfers easily. plus, if its hot out like here (102), things will get a tad warm.
As for the clear coat, hard to say what is going on there. Are you positive this is from the heat? what kind of cleaner have you been using?

Re: Wheels getting very hot
I have never really used a cleaner on them before, just spray them down with the tire degreeser from car washes.
It was plenty hot that day, around 99-100....but I jsut didn't think they should get that hot.

Re: Wheels getting very hot
When I go to wash my car, I usually clean the inside of the the car first(vaccum & wipe, etc.), to allow time for the rotors to cool. That way the hot rotors have time to cool before being hit with cool water.
If the brakes were not fully releasing, that could contribute to the excessive heat to the wheels.
You probably do alot of heavy braking routinely, say quickly slowing down from 140mph+ and other forms of spirited braking could also contribute to excessive wheel heat.
Also, if you have had a LS1 front brake upgrade and the calipers you got were "used", perhaps the pistons in the calipers are sticking just enough to prevent full release , thus causing friction between the pad and caliper.
A rebuild of the calipers may be in order or perhaps new calipers.

Re: Wheels getting very hot
Look in your summit or jegs catalog, they have a gun that you can point at your tires to measure their temp.
Get one of those and point it at where the wheel bolts to the hub and monitor the temps on cool vs hot days or daily driving vs. spirted driving.
