What would you do?

I'm thinking about a new motor for my car...currently has an L98 with mods in the sig...the old engine put 350hp to the wheels. The engine runs fine but I want a little closer to 500rwhp. I got AFR heads that could be ported....so I was thinking a forged stroker short block would be the way to go..so my question is if you had a budget of around 4K to spend on a new power plant for your car what would you do, stroker, lt1, ls1...?

thanks! 350Z

To get 500hp at the wheels NA, it is going to take a very aggressive cam and heads. The streetability and fuel economy of your car will go down the drain pretty quick. I would consider doing some sort of forced induction. Since your budget is around 4K, that will knock out a turbo or supercharger though. Why don't you just throw a 150 shot on top of the motor you have now and call it a day.

Ditch the FI, sell it and put it towards a good carb setup.

I thought about putting a blower on this motor or a 150 shot BUT...I don't think the stock internals would survive...

Well, you could keep the topend the same and put in a forged shortblock, that will easily keep you in the confines of your 4K budget. Then put a 150-200 shot on top of that. Then you have a car that will make 500rwhp at the touch of a button and you will not sacrifice streetability, emissions, or fuel economy.

You've already got good heads, you could have them ported, add cam and a mildly priced stroker kit along with the carb setup as I mentioned. I don't think you'd be too far off from 500 at the crank. Hell, those Hot Rod mag guys do it all the time with their setups, might be good to take a look at some of their setups in their magazines and see what you can come up with.

...and $4k won't get you a 500hp LS1 obviously. Good stock engine alone will break the budget. I think you've got a good start with some of your existing parts.

I know there's still some power to be had in the heads...I have an XFI cam in it now thats pretty agressive...I was thinking of buying a forged stroker short block then using my heads (after porting) and the miniram....I just don't know of alot of good stroker short blocks out there...

Try Victory Racing Engines, they sell several 355 and 383 shortblocks built and ready to go. They may be able to tailor one to your specific needs also, worth a shot to ask. www.victoryracingengines.com
