what type of speedometer sensor??

Hey, i'm asking this question for my friend.

what type of sensor is used on an 1988 firebird GTA to send the speedometer reading from the transmission to the digital dash? is it a speedometer cable, or is it a sensor, or is it just electronic? thanks

Sorry i reposted the same thread here mods, its just i'm hoping for quicker answers here.

Re: what type of speedometer sensor??

It is an electronic sender that fits into the side of the transmission and is driven by a gear.

They are called the speedometer drive gears. There are two actually, one fits over the tail shaft and the other fits on the sending unit. They are refered to by tooth count. The tooth count will be determined by the tire size and rear end ratio.

Cool, ok. So then the electronic sender is the speedometer cable that i can buy for $10 right?? Thanks. Also, this electronic sender and speedometer drive gears correspond with the digital dash on the GTA right? or does it also apply to the analog speedometer dash??

No. There is no cable. The sender is electronic.
