what is the likely cause of my car not starting on the first try...
its been doing this for about a month now, when i try to start my car it takes 2-3 times until it fires up, once its been on for a while, and i shut it off and try to turn it on, it seems like most of the time it will start on the first try, also, today, it wanted to start, but stumbled, then it died
, then i tried again, and then it started right up, a couple days ago, my service engine light came on, i went by autozone and they said the light came on bc of spark plugs and/or wires, now the light is off, but do u think maybe the spark plugs might be the prob w not firing right up? or do u guys have any other ideas? any help is appreicated, thanks

Re: what is the likely cause of my car not starting on the first try...
Properly the reason for the light is engine misfire since the car doesn't start up correct. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Also a weak fuel pump can be the problem on your start up.
Re: what is the likely cause of my car not starting on the first try...
yea, that was my guess too
fuel related
but yea, i'd replace the fuel filter and spark plugs, since you should do it every so often anyways
if it still persists, might be a weak fuel pump or the wires
you could try priming the fuel pump and see if it works
just turn it to run, then turn it to off
do that 3-4 times then start the engine
if it starts fine doing that method, it'll most likely be a weak fuel pump

One temporary way around a weak fuel pump, or a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump (lets the fuel pressure bleed off overnight, or when parked for a while), is to turn the key to on for 5 seconds, then back to off, then on for another 5 seconds, then off, then try to start the engine. If it starts right up after that, a fuel pump might be in your future. I believe the check valve is in the fuel pump, but a bad fuel pressure regulator can also allow fuel pressure to bleed off the lines.
Essentially what this does is prime the fuel line and builds pressure before the start. If everything is working well, the pressure in the fuel line should hold overnight. And with a strong pump should build immediately when the key is turned on.
All that said, a clogged fuel filter can slow all this up also.
