What happens when a rear end blows?

I was just wondering because i heard this a few times. Of course usually 10 bolts while drag racing but... What does it mean when a rear end breaks, do the gears break, does the axle break, posi, the housing itself or something else?

The 7 5/8 ring gear size is the weak link in a 10-bolt. When mine went, it took 4 teeth off the ring gear and then chewed up the pinion gear This is the most common breakage I hear of with the 10-bolt.

Re: What happens when a rear end blows?

Mine slowly went out. I was racing and shifted, heard a big clunk, which lead to a one wheel peel, and made lots of noise turning, and after that the next day trying to get it up the driveway, it slipped and caught a bunch, and by the time I got to my garage, we were pushing and calling a tow truck. What ended up happening to mine was the whole differential unit failed. When I pulled the cover, lots and lots of peices came flowing out with the oil. The ring gear had two small nicks, but the rest was fine. Cost me around 1200 dollars
