What is it? And do I need it?

Ok under the car you have the crossmember that attaches from the floorpan to the trans through the trans mount. From there if you go towards the rear of the car there is another one (crossmember?) what is it called and whats if for? It bolts to each side of the drive shaft canal and has the driveshaft, torque arm and exhaust above it inside the canal. Is it just a body/fram brace or something? forgive me if I didn't explain it very well but the reason I ask is because when I did my LT's and custom Y I had to remove it because the new exhaust setup was hitting it...Thanks

It is called tunnel brace. Mine has been off since about a year and a half. Also when I did the LT install. I do have DD SFC .
I have read some guys here that have removed it and do not have SFC.

I could be wrong, but I believe it to be there in case something awful should happen like your driveshaft coming apart at the joints. It should keep it from dropping to the ground and possibly causing more problems to you and the car. Someone correct me if this is not correct.

On BMRs website it says "Strengthen the floorpan and reinforce the driveshaft tunnel with a BMR tunnel brace."

I've heard from several people that it is safe to remove it even without SFC's. I considered removing mine, but since I'm not at the point of shedding pounds, and it doesn't interfere with my exhaust setup, I left it. It definately does help in the anticipation the driveshaft does come apart it won't "pole vault" the car. IMO though a thin piece of tin like that isn't gonna keep a very high speed rotating mass like a driveshaft from doing whatever the heck it wants. If it's in your way, you can probably remove it safely without any harm. I would recommend investing in a driveshaft loop though just to keep it on the safe side and aid in strength at the same time. That way you'll already be part of the way there with safety equipment when you start running really fast.

another vote for the driveshaft safety loop. slp has one for about $100. added strength. if worst case the front of your drive shaft falls off you could pole vault your car and at 100 plus mph you could roll. $100 vs your life is probably a good investment.
