Question What is the difference between SS and Z28?

What is the difference between SS and Z28? I bought a regular 98 LS1 5.7L Z28. I would like to know what is so great about the SS models? What did they come with that my car doesn't have...except a fancy hood. Thanks for any info....

they come with upgraded suspension, better exhaust, and upgraded wheels, along with a ram air intake hood and intake system and the raised spoiler.

Attitude in your post seems a little angry.

Here is a link on the suspension differences. Also, tires and wheels would go under that category and the link in that thread has some good info. on the exact specs of the shocks, springs, sway bars, etc. and includes the different levels of suspension you could get as well as the standard SS suspension. Then the obvious hood and spoiler. Slightly better exhaust (which most will argue is a common mod). Standard 3.23s if it is a auto. A lot of SLP optional equipment. Some one might want to list those or you can search. SS also retains the value of the package pretty well so it's not a lost cause. May have forgot somethings besides not listing every SLP option, feel free to add to the list. Here is a long thread about Z28 vs. SS, I am sure there are plenty more of them too.

Ok, I'm kinda new to this and don't know how all of this works, but:
If you took a Z28 and installed all of the optional equipment for an SS package, do you also somehow change the VIN in the "system" to read as SS instead of Z28? By system I mean like carfax, DOT, etc. So if you took it to the dealer for trade in, they'd give you SS value instead of Z28 value.

No....there's nothing you can do to legally change the VIN.

The VIN has nothing to do with it, other than a cross reference for SLP. It's the RPO code that makes it an SS. But yes it is considered fraud. You as an individual can not produce an SS, only the manufacturer/SLP can.

Just because you mod a Z28 to make it like an SS, doesn't mean the car magically becomes a real SS.

Oh, and to the original poster--your LS1 is 346 CI, not 350.

I have a true GM SS hood and SS spoiler, vin, low milage clean title, and rpo sticker. Off of a true '98 SS that I parted out.

Re: What is the difference between SS and Z28?

The standard SS diff was the same as the Z-28 in 2002, i.e. 3.42 for the M6. However, I recall an Auburn being offered on the order sheet. So, there was at least one SS diff upgrade for '02. Same ratio, BTW.
