Weights of optional and standard equptment

Much has been made about the weight of various items on a car. I was looking for sometyhing else and I came across a list of equptment weight on a '92 Camaro. I wanted to put this on a thread for future reference, and to add more up to date stuff (when I or someone else actually has time to look for this stuff) so it can be referenced the next time some bonehead doesn't understand that the more stuff you demand on a car and the more things are standard, the more it weighs and manufacture weights are for base models, not the moderately loaded version everyone actually buys.

This is for 3rd gen Camaros... scroll down for option weights related to 4th gen Camaros:

(Note: T-tops add 12 pounds. On an LT1, AC adds 48 pounds. Even cruise control adds over 4 pounds.)

My AC componentry did not weigh 48 lbs... unless the evaporator weighs 20 lbs (still in the dash and no, there's no way it weighs that much).

Remember that this difference would be the weight of the car with minus the weight without. I.e. it's not just the compressor. It may also be a larger radiator or more complex vent system, etc.

Interesting that a '92 with 350 and auto, loaded with T-tops comes out over 3500 pounds.

I remembered my '85 being about this much, though it had the 305TPI and no T-tops. It probably was around 3450, actually.

My '02 is 3515, if I believe the sticker on the door.

Btw, anyone who cares about weight should stay away from the large moonroofs that are starting to appear in cars. No way I'm giving up the A/C though!

For the 3rdgen if we are to believe those numbers I get 3499 for a t-top coupe and 101lbs of that is an auto so 3398 with a stick.
For the 4thgen I get 3603 with a manual.
So the 4thgen got fatter then the 3rdgen by 100lbs and the 5thgen got fatter then the 4thgen by 250lbs.
No new info to me. What am I supposed to take away from this?

And since you couldn't get that combination on a 92Z that number really doesn't mean anything.

FWIW, Here are the weights options added to Camaro back in 1967:
Chevrolet published curb weights for the 1967 Camaro as 2,910 lbs for the 6-cylinder coupe, 3,070 lbs for the 8-cylinder coupe, 3,165 lbs for the 6-cylinder convertible, and 3,325 lbs for the 8-cylinder convertible.

Add 21 lbs for power windows, 20 lbs for the folding rear seat option, 86 lbs for air conditioning, 9 lbs for power brakes, 33 lbs for front disc brakes, 10 lbs for the 250ci 6-cylinder engine, 39 lbs for the 327ci V8 engine, 72 lbs for the 350ci V8 engine, 258 lbs for the 396ci V8 engine, 7 lbs for the four-speed manual transmission, 14 lbs for the Powerglide automatic, 56 lbs for the Turbo Hydra-Matic, 38 lbs for dual exhausts, 29 lbs for power steering, 15 lbs for heavy-duty battery, 8 lbs for an AM radio, 9 lbs for an AM-FM radio, and 17 lbs for the Rally Sport option.

Can you even get a Mustang (or new Camaro) without power windows and doors? My 95 Z has neither. Frankly I like it better that way. Less mechanical crap to break on me over time. I would love to order a new SS without AC or power anything. I'll deal with the weight of t-tops if it's designed to have them and not just an afterthought. I don't want leather or power in my seats. I want a decent sound system but not a sub. None of this is possible therefore I will probably just keep my 95 and deal with it's creeks and squeaks.

No T-tops with the 350 in '92?

I know that the 350 only came with an auto.

That everything weighs something.

Just because a manufacturer posts a vehicle weight of a car (say, 3429 lbs), that doesn't mean that your car that has T-tops, power windows, top shelf stereo with a multi-disc CD in the trunk and a couple of extra speakers, leather interior (yes, even it weighs a few pounds more than cloth), cruise control, trunk release, and other options, followed by an aftermarket heavy duty (and heavier) clutch, bigger (and heavier) discs and calipers, or even a tougher set of gears in the diff is also going to weigh 3429 pounds.

...... actually, with all that, one'd be lucky if it weighed under 3600 pounds.

Very plausable.

Most all 4th gen Camaros weigh in the mid to upper 3500 pound range. Next to none were ordered in base form. 4th gens were generally heavier than 3rds.
