Way to find/check for AC refrigerant leaks?

Hello

My AC stopped blowing cold air after I removed the engine and replaced it. I didn't disconnect any of the AC lines (just unbolted retaining clips and moved them aside).

Dealership told me that my condenser is leaking, and that it needs to be replaced, but when I had the engine out, the condenser looked fine to me and it wasn't damaged any way by the removal (well... a few bent fins, but thats all)

The AC was working perfectly before the engine removal and install, but the car was sitting for a good year before the whole project was completed.

So is there a way to check for leaks? I have a hard time believing my condenser needs replacing. Is it possible that the refrigerant could slowley seep out if it's not used for a long period of time?

Thanks!

You can look around for referigerant oil, it escapes with the referigerant. Condensor is on the high side of the system and if it's leaking you'll lose the charge fast. You can get a recharge kit that has dye in it also. Did the dealership just troubleshoot/pressurize the system?

You can buy a leak detection kit at Autozone and Pepboys.

Thought so...
Not only will you save yourself $20 extra from that kit at autozone, but after your done useing the blacklight you can put it in your garage to screw with your eyes the rest of the time when your not useing it, pays for itself over and over again

Re: Way to find/check for AC refrigerant leaks?

Blacklight... hmmm...

If any oil did leak out... I would say it has be washed away by now... I got the engine running during the winter, so I never even noticed that I didn't have any cool air for a few months.

About the mechanic pressure testing it... I'm not quite sure. I dropped the car off... but I neglected to mension that I had removed and replaced the engine. So I starting thinking... what if the mechanic had a look at the AC system, and assumed that I hadn't touched anything, and the only way I have lost refrigerent is via a leak, but never actually pressure tested it.

Also... when I did the engine... I never noticed any refrigerant oil leaking (and I've seen what it looks like before).

Thanks for the help guys! The refrigerant must have gone somewhere!
