VATS bypass.....my key reads 5.91 on mulitmeter....

I just went to radio shack and got my 1 key tested. It reads 5.91 on the multimeter. From here http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#pass_key that puts me in the number 12 pellet code range (5798 to 6302).

Then, we made up a resistor using a 5.6K (2% var.) and (2) 200 ohm resistors to make up a total of 5.95K resistance (5950). Now, I realize this is higher than what my key reads (5910) but will it work???. They didnt have any 160 ohm resistors in store otherwise we could have made the exact, or a closer match.

What do you guys think??? I can get them to order the 160s, so thats not a problem.

In that link, the pellet range is 5798 - 6302 with the ideal reading 6040. If the actual reading of your resistors is 5950 there should be no problem.

When you say there should be no problem, do you mean becuase my key reads 5910 my VATS isnt the problem or do you mean the resistor I made will work?? From what I gather however, it sounds like you are saying my resistor I made will work.......but I'm tired, lol.

If u have the correct size resistors and it didnt work dont worry about it yet. It took us a couple of tries with putting the resistors in differant ways before we got it to work.

Have you done any other mods since the pcm tune? Might be worthwhile to just send the pcm in for a retune and as part of it have the VATs turned off.

Yes, I mean the resistor value you made should be good.

Having the VATs turned off in the PCM won't help. I have mine turned off and i still got security lights. I finally did the resistor mod and now i have no more problems. I know the VATS is turned off because i double checked it several times.

The VATS and not the PCM sends the signal to light the Security lamp.
The VATS does two things:
-enables the starter to crank
-sends a fuel enable signal to the PCM for it to allow the fuel injectors to operate
Programming the VATS out of the PCM only remedies/bypasses the fuel enable for the injectors.

Re: VATS bypass.....my key reads 5.91 on mulitmeter....

Hey guys,
I am doing a lot of learning about the LT1 so sorry if this is the wrong place to ask (should I start a new thread for this?)....

I have taken a 94 LT1 from a Caprice (computer and all) that was a police cruiser and will be putting it in an 86 IROC. It used the round key for everything (door, trunk, ignition). Is it safe to assume that a fleet vehicle doesn't use VATS? Or do I need to learn about VATS also and do this resistor mod?

Thanks for teaching me,
Jim

Re: VATS bypass.....my key reads 5.91 on mulitmeter....

I tried bypassing my VATS with the resistor mod, but my security light still stayed on.

Another way to bypass the vats is to jump (splice) the yellow and purple wire together in this diagram - http://shbox.com/1/pass_key.jpg then have the fuel shutoff tuned out of your PCM.

This completely bypasses the VATS without messing around with resistors.

Interesting. If the original car did not have a pellet in the key, I would guess there is no VATS involved.

So you bypass the theft deterrent relay and hook straight up to the starter solenoid?

Yes, that's pretty much it. That only enables the starter to crank. It won't let the engine run.

Then what's the point of that? It's like saying, "Hey, now you can flip this light switch, but it still won't light up the room" If you can't run it, then why start it?

he also said to delete VATS in the PCM, so yes, it would run, but both things need to be done
