Thoughts on Cutouts??

Just bought a 2000 SS and I had a cutout on my 94 Z28 and it sounded sweet!! but annoying sometimes lol but i hated how it rided even with it capped...But i got over it cause it made everyones head turn. Im thinking about putting it on the SS now but not sure which one I should get? 3" or 3 1/2"? And does it hurt the car in the long run??? Thanks alot!!!

Re: Thoughts on Cutouts??

I was also wondering if it would hurt the car in the long run due to going from backpressure with the exhaust to no backpressure with the cutout open?

Is switching back and forth bad for the engine or the o2's and other sensors are made to adjust so often?

And last question is are most cutouts put before the cat? I got a 94 and was thinking about putting one before the cat, would it fit ok?

Go with the 3".

Technically there could be problems if you have dual cutouts immediately after headers - so if you plan to run them all the time, that may not be the best idea. However, from what I have seen on this board, I have never read a report (nor have I looked that hard) that has put any blame on cutouts to any serious problems.

No problem with "no" backpressure (though there is some).

They will adjust fine. They constantly adjust anyway, so it wouldn't know the difference.

You will not have a significant diff. in gains if you put it before or after the cat. You are best off going after, in the place everyone else puts it (before the axle bend). If you are still concerned about the cat hurting performance - buy a hi-flow one, or dump them all together if possible.

This might sound stupid, but what about burnt valves due to low BP?? -My boss mentioned it to me.

The 3" cutout is what you will need on a stock exhaust setup. There are no side effects other then more noise and power.

I think you should get one and wire it into a radar detecter to close automatically so that you never get a ticket

I have dual 3" DMH elec. cutouts on my collectors of my Jet hot LTs, they are very fun to have especially when i roll up next to Dodge Ram drivers/motorcycles and open up the cutouts and watch their faces go like this

The cats make it sound like *** though. Cutouts behind the cat have always sounded like crap in my experience.

Valve problems ARE possible - though I've never seen any reported on this board due to dual cutouts. It's not the low backpressure I believe that causes the valves to warp/crack/burn/whatever -- but it's where the exhaust exits. With cutouts IMMEDIATELY after the headers, it COULD be possible that when you shut the car off - a rush of air (much cooler than whatever temp the valves are) is pulled back thru the headers, and cooling the valves very rapidly. Whether or not the length of the headers is enough to prevent this - I do not know. Running open shortys probably isn't a good idea though

If I'm way off on this interpretation someone let me know.

I didn't mind mine stock with a cutout at the bend when I had that setup.

Re: Thoughts on Cutouts??

It shouldn't hurt the valves any. Cold enough air to warp a valve getting through the headers isn't likely. There would be alot of warped valves on race cars if that were the case. One thing to keep in mind though, Cut-outs (In Illinois anyway) are illegal. Granted they have to find them first, but if you get caught with them open or worse yet, get caught opening & closing them by a cop, Just somethin' to consider.
