Angry Stripped Torx bolt!

Well I'm back to working on my suspension again today. I started to work on the front drivers side and I cant get those damn torx bolts out near the master cylinder. I stripped the sheisse out of the bit and the the recess in the bolt head where you stick the bit is almost completly stripped too. Any ideas on how to get these bolts out? Is there an "indestructible" torx driver bit I can buy cuz my crappy one stripped without me even trying?

Re: Stripped Torx bolt!

are you talking about the shock tower bolts? first make sure that you have teh correct size. Torxs sizes can be confusing, some seem to fit but of you go the next one higher it fits better. a good example is the screws on an IAC motor. they are T20, but a T15 looks like it will work, but will usualy strip. Get teh right size and order a snap on bit. They have the srongest. I have never broken one.

I'm using a T50. It seemed to fit kinda loose. Can anyone confirm what the right size is?

T50 is pretty large. I was guessing maybe a T30 or 35.. I would have to grab my torxs set at work to find out

If anything, I need the next size bigger than a T50. Maybe a T52. I'm gonna run up to Vatozone right now.

Re: Stripped Torx bolt!

They make a new style of Torx bits called Torx +. They are so much better because they had thicker points to help prevent the stripping out. Worst comes to worst you might have to drill it out. Or try to hammer a bigger bit in there and turn it out.

Re: Stripped Torx bolt!

I couldnt find a T52 so I got another T50. I could have sworn I saw a T52 there just yesterday. Anyways I managed to get one of the bolts out. I hammered bit in so it fit snugly then pulled like hell. Ill try getting the other one out tomorrow. Thanks.

Those are some words of wisdom. Ive never rounded off my snap on torx bits. Everyone that has any other kind, including matco and mac, have had problems. Snap On just makes the best torx period.

I've twisted a snap on torx bit. Got it replaced the next day since the Snap on guy came in.

If you've stripped the torx, you may try using an allen wrench.

Re: Stripped Torx bolt!

use a dremal drill with the little disk on it to put a slot in it. then just turn it out with a screwdriver. this is what i do when i have striped bolts. then just buy a new bolt.

a lot of times an allen will strip the bolt. It works sometimes but not all. Just always be carefull.

yeah, the snap on design has been improved further. I do not preach to only buy snap on tools even tho I am a mechanic but for some things there are just no better tool out there. I sware by there Torx socktes, allens, and comfort grip screw drivers. that and there impact swivel sockets. they rest a slightly cheeper high end tool works great.

the best advice that I can give anyone with torx. Have a good snap on set. even when you find the one that fits try the next size up. always aply pressure down on the bit while you turn.

another thing is that a lot of cheeper sets do not come with a T27 bit. Thats a special bit that a T20 and T30 will not work on. Snap on has them. someone lost mine

I couldnt get the 2nd bolt out by ordinary means so I started to try to drill it out.

Torx is much stronger head then allen, philips, or flathead. You just need the PROPER socket/bit to make it work
