I have a 95 6 speed trans am. Until today I could open my rear hatch with my hatch relase button one of two ways. One was if my car was off. THe other if the car was running, the parking brake had ot be on.

Well today I start my car, and I wanted to load a disc into my 12 disc changer. So I had already started my car and then I hit the hatch release button. But nothing happened. So I tried again and still nothing. I made sure the parking brake was on and it was. But then I notice that my brake warning/idiot light was not illuminated on my dash. I thought, well maybe it is burnt out. SO I turn my car off and turn it back on and it lights up. So while it is lit up I hit the hatch release button and it works. So I load my cd and get back in. THe light is off again. And the parking brake is still on. I try the hatch rlse button and it wont work.

So what I could figure out is the car must have some sort of relay that allows me to open the hatch while it is running if the brake light is on,. Becuase it thinks if the brake warning/idiot light is on then I must have my parking brake set and not travelling down the road and trying to open my hatch.

DOes anyone know what could be wrong with it? Has anyone had this trouble before?

Seriously though, there's a switch on the hand brake. If you pull the center console, you'll see it. That switch is gummed up. Either clean it, or replace it.

Easy fix.

 

No never spilled anything in my car. Cant say for the previous owner though, but didnt see any signs of it when I had the console off for my pro 5.0 install.

It makes sense that that is what the problem is though. I think I didnt have enough sleep last night or something . Yeah the way it acted up today. Sometimes it would work and others it wouldnt would say a gummed up switch. Guess the car is showing its 9 year age. I replaced the clutch safety switch about 3 mos ago as it was messing up as well.
