Steering Column Problems - Followup To Ignition Key Problem

Hi,

This is followup to the message I posted previously regarding ignition key problems with my 96 Camaro. The problem is that my ignition key is difficult to remove and I cannot turn the ignition to the "ACC" position. It was suggested that it was an issue with the ignition switch on the steering column.

Today, it has a new issue, which I think will help pinpoint the problem. I notice that the when the car is parked, the sterring wheel does not lock. It will turn with a little force as I feel something trying to stop it at a point but will go past that point with a little effort. Based on this new fact, I think the problem is in the steering column. Does anyone know what would cause this and what needs to be done to fix it? Do I need to replace the ignition lock mechanism? Is there a way to just remove the steering lock mechinism but keep the ignition lock mechanism and original keys?

The funny thing is that I have to pull the steering wheel soon as I have to tighten the srews to the tilt mechanism. Hopefully I can fix both problems at the same time.

Thank you

Id say when you tear it down to fix the screws, clean out all the old grease, and regrease everything, sounds like its just gummed up

If you have access to a good used column complete, may be a faster fix
