Starter motor problems...

pulled the starter when I did the clutch... car drove for 3kish miles no problems.

did a tranny swap 2 days ago, but this time never pulled the starter never even unhooked it.

Started up fine no issues at least a dozen or more times. then today drove to work car was fine. Parked it, for 11 hours while at work. I started it up and the starter motor was continuously running, and if I shut the car down and took the keys out, starter was still cranking.

Since I lived near by decided to try a d make a run for it. halfway decided to stop. The car starter running the whole time, then I stopped because i was worried I was going to overheat it, starter still going with keys out, so I unhooked the bat, it stops. I started it up, same issue starter cranking. had to unhook battery, let car sit for a bit so it cooled down.

After like 5 min or so, car started up no problems drove around to get some airfow around the motor and cool it down( I could smell the starter "electrical smell" under the hood) drove home, shut it down and started it up a good 20 times no problems...

any ideas? think the wires on the starter are getting crossed?

Re: Starter motor problems...

I had an '85 Mustang years ago - similar prob. I was sitting a light and the starter just up and started trying to engage the running motor - ugh what a horrible noise . I didn't tear into it - but the local shop said it was a simple short - insulation rubbed off a wire shorting on the firewall. That "simple" short took him a long time to find. As a side note - he said while he had it on the lift it started to crank by itself before he found the problem.

Have you guys ever seen "maximum overdrive"

cars trying to start themselve... crazy stuff.
It could also be that the starter is not engaging the flexplate correctly and causing the solonoid to stick. When the solonoid kicks the gear out, it should slide back in easily. If it is too tight against the ring gear it can stick.

Great movie Can't really think of any other movie where AC/DC music would be appropriate
