So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
That seems to be what this thread is saying? http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=453440 It looks that the majority with higher engine sizes are getting better mileage? I thought it was the other way around.
Re: So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
Not true for me, my 3.4 will get about 400 to the tank on the highway running ~3000 rpm while my z-28 struggles to see 300 running ~2000 rpm. To top it all off, there's a couple hundred pounds extra weight from the spoiler, ground effects, paint and stereo in the 3.4 that the z-28 doesn't have.
Re: So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
my cammed LS1 with a 6spd and stock gears gets 25mpg on the highway (75-80mph) and about 18 or 19mpg in semi-city driving.
and i don't even have a very good part throttle tune...so i'm hoping that improves.

Re: So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
Have had both and the range on a full tank is about 300-350 miles. The Z28 gets slightly better gas mileage because it is newer and has that silly skip shift feature enabled.
Re: So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
Depends how you drive. A bigger engine can get better fuel mileage because it's not working as hard. It can also get worse fuel mileage when it is working harder. My daily driver 454 truck gets around 11 mpg in the city and about 17 on the highway. I had an old 4x4 with a 350, manual transmission and better gearing that got the same mileage.

Well by no means do I drive like a bat outa hell. I have already had some close calls in my dad's Camaro and am not looking forward to anymore.
Would adding some small things like exaust actually help out on the gas? I know it advertises it, but I never took it seriously. I thought of it as more power = more gas consumption.

think about it, if you can get more power from less throttle(=fuel), that means better mileage, correct?

'98 V6, Y87, auto with 2.25" catback and K&N filter and i pull 22-24 city and 29-31 highway. that's with normal driving. the clock is just about to hit 100k.
not so sure about people claiming 30+ mpg hwy with a V8. 25 seems reasonable with an LS1 though.
like most people will say though, it depends on how you drive. if you drive like a ****ing maniac, then you will have poor mileage.
most things like exhaust, headers, CAI will give you better mileage. oversized injectors on a totally stock car, Rousch plugs, and brakestands will result in more gas consumption.

Re: So wait a second the v8 gets better gas mileage?
i picked up a consistent 1mpg increase in milage when i installed a magnaflow catback on my LT1
and recently i installed a good air intake on my gf's jeep wrangler 4.0L and we picked up a consistent 2mpg in city, and 3mpg highway (over several hundred miles of identical driving). planning to do exhaust on it soon for a little more boost

how much more does that paint weigh vs stock paint?

Saw 26 with my LT1 on the highway once. That was with several triple digit stints, too. Remember that engine design and gearing, along with vehicle weight and aerodynamics are just as important as engine size. Driving style also plays a big factor, especially for the v8s. I'm sure a babied LS1 could out-mileage a beat-on 3.8... if you treat them both the same there should be a measureable difference, but not a shocking one.
