Short Stick

I was looking at some short sticks on Ebay, and had a few questions about them. 1) I heard that since they are so short, that my shift **** may hit my console when in 2nd, 4th, or 6th. Is there any truth to this. and 2) Is getting just the short stick worth it, or should I just hold off and buy a whole new unit. I know that a whole new unit would be better performance wise, but I didnt know if the just a shorter stick would make any difference at all. Thanks

Re: Short Stick

get a shift **** that clamps to the side instead of screws on, then use a hack saw on any stick that has some girth to it. that way you can get it as short as you want.

Re: Short Stick

i've had a Lou's short stick on a 96z with a factory Hurst unit, and now the hurst unit on my 99z.

i also had an MBA **** on the stick which is designed to shorten the stick more (threads are deeper in the ball). on the 96 the **** would just barely hit the console in 2/4/6 if i was shifting hard. not enough to prevent full engagement or anything...or enough to do damage to the console.

on the 99z, the consol is different, and i had no problems what so ever with the **** hitting. the **** is a reasonable distance from the console iin those gears.

i would say that the stick is WELL worth it!!!!! i couldn't beleive the difference when i put mine on. keep you eyes out for a factory Hurst shifter from and SS or WS6, typically $50 or so...combine that with a short stick and you have a GREAT shifter for a very affordable price.

i have a bunch of pics of different sticks on my 99z on my webpage, and i also have a short stick for sale. check it out.

Re: Short Stick

Yea so i ended up ordering a stick on ebay, it definatly hits my console. Its not the **** that hits though, its the stick itself. I'm not happy $25 down the drain.

Yeah I bought a stick off eBay and it hit the console when in 2nd 4th and 6th...it would barely go into gear but it worked..I sold it to someone who could use it...got a Hurst **** instead...Im planning to just go ahead and buy an aftermarket shifter and get it over with...I've had many instances where I lost a fender because of 3rd.

Re: Short Stick

find a used factory hurst off of an SS or ws6 for like $50 and you will not have any problems with the stick hitting.

that way you have a VERY good shifter for less than half the cost of an aftermarket...and a short stick to boot.

my hurst shifter, with lou's short stick has 3" of travel from 1st to 2nd...a flick of the wrist!

Re: Short Stick

the stock shifter and the factory option hurst shifter both have the same bolt pattern, infact they both used the same crappy stick.

i've machined a stick for both...measurements are the same.

realize i'm NOT talking about the aftermarket hurst

Re: Short Stick

Save your pennies and look into the B&M Ripper. I LOVE this shifter. Solid as a rock. Just prepare for wrist injury if you miss a shift...hehe I have a pic of it in my link below.

Re: Short Stick

Lou's short stick has a slight angle in it to avoid this problem. I don't know if the units on Ebay have the angle. Personally I've had Lou's short stick on two of my f-bodies, and the B&M Ripper on the other. The LSS with the factory Hurst shifter is about 95% of the B&M Ripper for a lot lower price.

Re: Short Stick

The one i bought on ebay had a left slant to it so it would be closer to me. What was weird about the shifter not fitting was that the guys said that he's never had a problem with his shifter doing this, i also read a thread on a different site about this exact shifter, and not one person had a problem with it. So i dont understand why it doesnt work on my 98, but it worked on every other year 93-02.

About how much is a Lou's Short Stick, and where can I get one?
