Sell AsIs or Sell After Repairs 94Z
Sell AsIs or Sell After Repairs 94Z
Ok, with the lack of progress on my other cars, it looks like its time to sell the 94Z. Mines a teal hardtop, auto, chrome wheels. Has the oil and trans cooler, 3.42 posi, 140 speedo, 113K miles. Overall the car runs well, burns zilch oil, gets around 24 mpg on the highway, body is in good shape with no rattles.
Here's the questions.
1. The AC compressor is locked up. I'm figuring around $500 if I replace it and all the other stuff that goes with it. I've got a lab-grade vacuum pump so I can do the repairs.
2. The trans slips a lot on manual downshifts. Slips a little when you get on it. I've heard around $1500 - 1700 for a rebuild installed. When you just drive it around town, or at a steady speed on the highway, its absolutely fine. Even when you accelerate, its fine. I don't beat or race the car, but I think it lived a harder life before me.
So all this means I've got to put around $2K (or more) into the car to make it run perfect. But I'm thinking that there's no way I'll get that $2K back, over what I could get for it now. KBB excellent condition shows $4100 for the car, but I think that's wayy low. Fair condition is $3200. Personally I think the car's worth around $4K as is, and maybe $5200 with everything repaired.
But then again, KBB's numbers always seem off.
So what has been everyone's experience? Invest in the repairs, or just sell as is?

LT1 Camaros just aren't holding value. I wouldn't put money into mine just to sell it unless the problems made it undrivable.
Yeah I got a used A/C compress for $50.00 from salvage about 2 years ago. Took it to a shop and had oriphace(spelling) tube replaced and a refill. Still works great today.
You probably will not get the money for the tranny out of it. It depends on the buyer, your either getting a young kid who is not going to have to cash to fix it if it breaks or someone who is buying it to romp on and has no problem putting a tranny in it.
I think if it slips bad enough everyone is going to try a low ball you. But a car with no problems, good A/C and a tranny that will need work in about 5-10k miles will sell alright I think.
Good Luck!

your numbers are probably a little overly optimistic. look at edmunds.com for what things are really selling for you may be surprised. you might get 3g out of it as is. maybe 4 fixed. it's hard to say. i just bought a 94Z A4 w 120k miles, minor bolt ons & 3.73s, fairly fresh tranny, A/C leaks out but does work, think it needs an intake gasket fix, but drives great, paint sucks and is teal also but shines up OK, has qtr panel damage but nothing major approx 500-800 to fix, newly inspected. i put a radiator in it. got it for $1800. just for reference. i think that was a good deal.
i saw a lot of old Zs that were listed at way over value and they're just going to sit til the price drops. unfortunately, the resale value sucks.

I've seen the prices for lt1s in general just take a ****. I jokingly posted my old lt1 on craigslist not expecting anything and I had someone buy it for $5650 no questions asked. No point if the car doesn't hold value unless you really like it. Cars are not investments.
here two years ago when i bought my LT1, i paid 4500 for it, and at that time it was a steal. Now, prices have gone down dramatically, and ones in as good of condition with less mileage sells for about 3500. Some can be had for 2k here.
