safe to run car on jackstands?

I am trying to pin point some noises coming from the rear of the car and I was wondering If i could run the car with the back up on jack stands. Maybe I could have the jack supporting the differential too? Has anyone ever done this or is the car going to rock around to much for it to be safe.

Thanks

I do this on fresh automatic rebuilds and initial diff run ins after a gear swap. I do it with the stands under the diff. I don't give it WOT, either idle or mild rpm. As long as car is securely prepared as you would any time you put it up on stands, only added risk is if you're dumb enough to get near any rotating parts.

What kind of noises?

Definitly use jack stands and the jack under the differential. If you're going to run the car in gear at idle or very low speed/low power, probably OK. Don't try to load it or spin very fast. Be very careful, there's a lot of wieght and torque at work.

You may try having someone else drive the car while you move around and try to pin point while driving.

Make sure you chock the front wheels (or put the front up on jack stands too).

I do it with 4 stands all the time, good way to break in trans and check for engine leaks.

Yeah, that's how I started my car (first run on the engine) last weekend.
