When I changed the oil the other week, I noticed that I had a fair amount of rust on the underside of my car, on the floor boards. Especially around the pinch welds and where the subframes connect. What can I do? I plan on keeping this car for quite a while, so I would like to rectify this situation, but I dont have tons of money, actually, I have almost none And help would be HUGELY appreciated! Thanks a ton!

P.S. On a side note, would it be possible to beat out the hump in the passenger side floor board, considering it has no use really on my car? Thanks again!

 

Oil spray is very effective.

 

Could you elaborate on that? And what if there is already some rust that has eaten a little bit of the floor board away? The car has 110k on it and was daily driven the whole time, in rain, snow, or shine. Thanks!

 

There are at least four places within 2 miles of my house that will oil spray the underside only or all body panels with an oil specifically designed for rust proofing. The key is to not use an oil that is intended to act as a lubricant since these will destroy rubber seals etc. Oiling regularly is the best way to stop rust forming and to stop it from spreading.

 

I personally would jack the car up and get a wire brush on a grinder and go over all the areas effected. On the pinch weld they sell this stuff thats called Body seam sealer and its almost like a Caulk that can be spread over seams of a body to keep moisture from entering. Over the flat areas of your floor i would wire brush them and then i would clean, prep and paint them with some of the rust prevention products from Eastwood. They offer some products that you brush on that are super thick, thats probably what i woudl want for the floor as no one will see it and you want it thick to protect it from road debris. After that you could buy a can or 2 of rubberized undercoating and spray that on the floor. Make sure you get the rust off before you put something on over it or the rust will just come back. Also i don't think pounding the hump in the floor out is a good idea. The best idea would be to cut that section out and weld in a new piece of metal.

Do you have holes in your floor board? My car has 78k miles and was daily driven but the rust isnt that bad. I have a spot on the rocker pannel from a paint chip and i have some spots on the seams of the floor boards where teh undercoat was worn away. What i do is wd40 that sucker all the time, or go to a marine store and get soem corrosion inhibator that stuff works great since its designed to keep off sea salt and heavy corrosive stuff.

As far as a new floor board you might just want to go to the junk yard but i find it hard that you will need one already

 

As mentioned above, check into POR15. The stuff works.

 

POR-15 is expensive and it doesnt bond all that well. I used it on my other cars and i was not impressed.

You HAVE to get the bare metal coateing so it will bond
if you dont use that coating then it will flake and peel off
you have to then apply 3-4 coats of it on the area you want. For enough paint to cover 25 feet i think cost around 60 bucks? It has been awhile since i used it.

For me it was a slow process that didnt yield great results many other people are telling me this as well since POR-15 changed there formula and it doesnt bond as well as it used too. When it is that rust you are just gunna have to replace the metal no way around it.

I am pretty sure all years have the same type floor boards so it shouldnt be hard to find a donor car. Maybe even ebay? I know there is a vendor here who parts out wrecked f-bods maybe try looking them up

 

i got 170k of MA weather i live on the beach too so my floor boards are in pretty bad shape. i have no holes in them but thier is a solid line of rust around the rockers and back near the rear seat drain holes. this car was beat on before i got it. i am actually in the process of a large rebuild, and want to get it all fixed right
