Requirements To Race

I will probably never take my V6 to the strip but in the future when I do get Z28 or SS, I was wondering what I need to have to drag race at a professional strip. Not just a side street in town. I probably sound very naive but I would like to know. im guessing a rollbar and a helmet? I dont know. Thanx

Re: Requirements To Race

Per NHRA reg's, you'll need a driveshaft loop if you're using any kind of sticky tires, such as drag radials or slicks. Helmet required if you're running faster than 13.99. You won't need a rollcage until you're well into the 11's.

Every track is different. Some follow straight by the NHRA rules, some don't check ANYTHING and you'll skate right through, and some have their own rules in addition to what the NHRA rule book states. Your best bet is to go to your local track and ask some of the participants on how strict they are and what they look for, if anything.

Edit: Oh yeah, and don't show up in shorts and a tank top expecting to play. You need full-length pants and a T-shirt at a minimum. Battery tie-down and a coolant overflow tank is another one they'll look for, but if you've got a late-model car you don't have to worry about that stuff because they come from the factory with that.

They also check for seatbelts and lugnuts. If you have plastic caps on your lug nuts you may have to remove one to show that the stud goes far enough into the threads of the nut. They might also check that the seat and belt are securely bolted to the floor.

There's a great article on drag racing basics at http://www.modernmusclecars.net/foru...hp?do=drbasics

You can also go to www.speedwaysonline.com to find your nearest track and get local info.

Re: Requirements To Race

Thanx Guys. My local strip, Firebird International, does require a helmet if you can do a 13.99 or better. 11.99 or better a rollbar. Right now with my weak V6 i can go down there with 17 bucks in hand, shirt shoes and pants and im good to go! Z-28's do need a helmet though.
