Replaced the Condensor, Questions about recharging A/C...

I had to replace the Condensor myself as I accidently drilled a hole in my last one... ... I was told by someone that I might have to have the entire system vacuum pumped to get rid of all the humidity before I have it recharged, is this true? If not then can I buy a few cans of R134 from Walmart and recharge it myself? or would you recommend someone with a bit more experience do it?

you need to have it vacuumed out since it was open to the elements or its never going to cool right

And this isn't an engine tech question.
