Really need help... simple how to question.
Really need help... simple how to question.
Ok... I know that the best place for this question is probably in the lounge.. because this is not a problem with an F-body. BUT, you know just as well as I do.. that I won't get an answer there. So if the thread has to be moved, well I understand completely. But it does relate to the 3.4 litre engine, which I think was used in the early V6 Camaro's if I'm not mistaken?
My 93 Cutlass Supreme (3.4 L twin dual overhead cam) ran into some valtrain trouble last week. Long story short, I've now put back together everything. But I need to seat the timing belt. And to do that, I know I need to roatate the engine about 3 times.
But for the life of me.. I am scarred to just start turning pullies and cogs. I know that adjusting the timing on these engines are a NIGHTMARE and I don't need that right now.
Can someone tell me how you turn these engines over by hand?? I am not familar with these things at all.
I would really appreciate the help.. and I appologize for the out of place thread.

Re: Really need help... simple how to question.
Im not that familiar with 3.4s, but with every other engine Ive worked on put a socket on your crank bolt and start cranking. And its better to find a problem, like something not line up, while youre just moving the internals by hand then when you go to fire it up. GL
Re: Really need help... simple how to question.
Thanks guys.. I figured it was the crank pully. But I just wanted to hear it from someone else.
Unfortunately.. I've put everything back together.. and she isn't firing. My guess is the timing is off and my book is not explaining how to go about adjusting the timing.
Does anyone have a guide that could help me out? I see a bunch of yellow marks on the cogs of the camshafts etc... so I assume they are used to set the timing. But I just don't know in what orientation to line them up.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Really need help... simple how to question.
Hopefully someone else will chime in here w/ more help.
I believe you want the cams to be sitting on their base circle and the crank to be on the compression stroke for the #1 piston to set up the base timing.
It is possible to align everything 180* out. If that's the case it won't fire.
