Re: R12 to R134...can you mix them? conversion questions
I didn't read all the stuff in this thread after it turned into a pissing contest - but here's what I know, FOR FACT.
My truck didn't have factory air, it is a 1971 Model GMC.
I bought a 1969 GMC that did have facotry air. No doubt a R12 system.
My uncle is a mechanic with all the tools and licenses etc. needed to give it a good service and fill it up with R12. So I buy I think 7 cans of R12 - something around $120 worth.
We get everything good to go, and fill it up. While filling it up - the windshield on the inside frosted - with actual frost, like on the inside of a freezer! I was freaking out - it was great.
Well - next morning - I walk out, and hear a "spshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh". Go down, open the hood, and sure enough, where the lines bolt into the back of the compressor an O-Ring got pinched, and every last bit of R12 leaked out.

That evening, before doing the R134 Conversion...
We drained the oil, put in the 134 stuff, put on the conversion kit etc...re-pulled the vacuum...and then put in the R134.
My air conditioner sucks now...its barely cold compared to the R12...I remember how cold it was while sitting in the cab when charging it.

There is no question that R-134a doesent work as well as R-12. The problem is that R-12 is no longer produced. So the price is sky high. And yes I do "practice" the art of Heating and cooling.

Re: R12 to R134...can you mix them? conversion questions
yup, you're right. its not AS cold.
the main reason is its not as efficent. so when your older R12 AC system is filled with 134a, it just doesnt get as cold.
but, if you filled a modern 134a system with R12, it would get really REALLY cold. modern systems are just more efficent, so they can use this "lesser" refrigent. cheaper too.
there are some things you can do to help the 134a work better in the R12 system.. if you follow that link i posted on the first page, it might be useful to you. GM used the same AC system FOREVER until they absolutly had to change it.. lol.
