QUESTION: for all those SS experts

I'm looking at getting a 99' SS. But when I look up the Vin it says its a z28, I'm sure that the SS is just a package and will come up with the RPO codes, and thats why it says z28 and not SS. Can anyone confirm this? its it correct in saying z28 instead of SS? is it just the 99 year?

any help would be great, Im a thirdgen guy and don't know much about the fourth gens.

Yes, I am pretty sure it will just show up as a Z28. I am in the same boat, my car shows up as a Trans-Am, even though it is a Firehawk.

Yes, a carfax will show it as a Z28. When you look at the RPOs it has the Z28 RPO as well as the SS RPO.

99 is a noticeable year.
It has the classy 5 spoke ZR1 wheels and it's the first year Chevy offered dual outlet exhaust on the SS

Question

Are you guys sure about that? I thought only '96-'97 SS had a Z28 VIN.

If it is a true SLP SS, there is a sticker on the door jamb that indicates it.

I thought in 98+ the SS was made by GM not SLP. So would that mean that the SLP decal wouldn't be there.

Okay...I was incorrect.

From what I now understand...it will have a Z28 VIN, but for '99s and up, it will also have the Y2Y option indicated on the build info.

AND...if it does not have the SLP sticker on the door jamb, it was either removed for some reason or it was never an SS to begin with.

Thanks a bunch guys!!

I checked the vin, and it says z28. But it does have those awesome Five spoke rims, the hood, badges, exaust. So I'm positive its an actual SS. But I just want to make sure. Around here it seems to be common to dress something up into something its not.

I'm talking to the guy again tomorrow, so I'll get the RPO codes and look for an SLP sticker.

Thanks!

This is not the case. Base model SS cars will not have the SLP sticker on the passenger door. This is also part of the misconception of the Y2Y RPO. For a dealer to order a SS they must order with the Y2Y RPO ( this means that the car went through SLP's shop ). The WU8 RPO is GM's SS RPO ( I know it sounds kind of redundent, thats because it is from what T.J. at SLP told me a while ago ).

The second sticker will only be present if there are additional SLP options installed on the car ( center exhaust, etc... ). My SS has both the WU8 and Y2Y codes, but no SLP sticker on the pass. door because there were no SLP options installed. This was confirmed by SLP.

You can only confirm that it is an SS by the WU8 RPO and not the SLP sticker.

I don't know about the newer SS's since they don't all go through SLP anymore, but when I was looking at another '97 I just called SLP with the VIN to verify that it was authentic.

SLP can still verify it.

If it has the Y2Y RPO then the car went through SLP. My car has no SLP options, but I was told that it did in fact roll through the shop (or atleast it sat outside of it on a truck).

Yea, but if you dont have time to call SLP to verify, the quickest method is checking the WU8 RPO.

thanks for the info guys!!

I went and checked out the car yesterday. And right there on the door was an SLP sticker, and just above it was the RPO codes and they contained the WU8 code.

It looks like it IS in fact an SS. I took it for a drive and it was awesome!! I'm going to get it now, but the owner is leaving for a month on a business trip, so I have to wait till he gets back.

Thanks guys! I feel much better about making the purchase.
