Power window motor questions

I think my passenger power window motor is fried. When it gets near the top it usually conks out....then i gotta sit there for 5 or 10 minutes and keep presiung the button to get the window up....or come back later and try.
Is this the pwoer window motor? could it be the switch?
If its the motor has anyone ever changed them? is it difficult?
thanks!

Re: Power window motor questions

Thats what happened to mine. I replaced it very easily and it's been fine for almost a year now. I think Brent on this site has a website with good directions. It was the first time for me and the directions were easy to follow.

Try a search, you might find a link to the site.

That is wha happened to my driver's side. It was about a 45 minute job to replace it, being very carefuol not to damage anything. Use Shoebox's site for very excellent instructions.

(And donate a dollar two while you're there people- the time and effort that dude must have in his site is huge, and it's not for his own personal benefit! I see more people being refered to his site for "how tos" than anywhere else. It's a great resource and should be supported.)

I got mine from Autozone locally for $45 I believe. They were Siemens brand and carry a LLT (limited lifetime) warranty. They now cost $49.99. Here:

Re: Power window motor questions

if this helps any..I had a huge problem with my driverside window and it did the same thing you described. The window would go up but would get stuck when it reaches to the top but still had a lil ways to go. I found out that the bolts loosened up on the window regulator and the misaligned arms wedged the motor. The first time it happened it wedged the motor and I was able to unwedge it and it worked for awhile. I eventually had the entire window assembly replaced and its been perfect since. If you close your door by the window, you'll have major problems. If you do choose to take your car to the dealer...have them replace the entire assembly to be absolutely sure everything is new and somewhat flawless..plus you'll be covered with the warranty on the entire unit. The price should be around $350 but troubleshoot your window yourself first-off. Oh, i put a new switch in and it actually helped my window go up quicker, I guess it was a lil worn out and dirty or something..very noticeable difference.
Anyhow, after replacing the motor twice and wasting money...several times of the window getting stuck I found out that the track was broken which made the arms wedge and since my car was used..I'm sure the previous owner shut the car by the window whole bunch of times. Also, close your door gently from now on after you fix it. Passengers slam my door like its a semi truck door, that pisses me off so now i have banned passengers for good.

Re: Power window motor questions

Follow shoebox's step-by-step description on his site. It is wonderful. Though I only really needed the pic of where to drill, the rest would be good for someone who is a novice.

I've been pretty pleased with my Autozone window motor; better than the GM replacement motor on my passenger door (was done under warranty when I bought the car).

Re: Power window motor questions

with these motors, the auto roll down fuction, is it built into the motor or is there a relay some where? My motor has been replaced and this fuction doesn't work anymore.

A power window control module controls the express down feature. Replacing the motor should not have affected it.

My page just has a link to shoebox's window motor replacement guide. One of the few times I've used a guide made by somebody else rather than just do it and make my own Good job shoebox!

Well, you can tell by your avatar that you must be just plain lazy.

Almost 5½ years ago I put that guide on the WWW. ...and the GM motor I used when I made the guide is still working. That's longer than the original one!

Thank you, Rob. I will look into that. It looks like it is on the drivers side under the dash..
