odometer quit

My manual for my 96 Z28 says nothing about odo and I did a search. It is a cable right? I assume the little gear has died that is at the wheel? Some help on replacement/fix is appreciated.

It is not cable driven. It operates off a electric motor and a set of little plastic gears. It is most likely shot.

The good news is it is east to replace. Here is a link to a picture of the assembly and how it bolts to the back of the guage backing. Note the guage backing in the picture is clear because I was in the middle of installing white faced guaged when the picture was taken.

It is held in with 3 screws and 1 connector. I'd try fixing yours first, then replace it with one from a different cluster. The shaft with the number wheels on it pops out easily so if you replace it you can set the new one for the accurate miles.

Thanks for the info TABAHR, and yeah LOL I only saw a slight disadvantage in not having it. But, I don't want to drive with one of those measuring wheels out the window to figure oil changes and such.
