Noise when off the clutch.....only sometimes?
EDIT: Sorry wrong section
Can this be moved to Drivetrain?
Well, I posted before about a noise...sort of metal on metal knocking sound when I have my foot off the clutch. It only seems to happen when the car is completely warmed up, ie - 200 degrees and driving for 10 minutes or more. The only problem is that it does not always happen when warmed up, seems to have a mind of its own. If I get under the car I can clearly hear it...I would think it was a sound coming from the cat but as soon as I push down the clutch it is silent. I have been told it is the throwout bearing, pilot bushing.......not sure. Has anyone else experienced this type of in-and-out noise with their M6? I really don't want to have any work done and if I have to I am going to upgrade the clutch and have everything done at once and I can't really afford spending $800-$1000 for transmission work right now. Hopefully I can baby the car as I usually do until i get married next summer and have some money to fix it
.
Oh and there are no noises when driving, shifts fine (very stiff when cold but that is normal from what I read) and no noise when doing WOT runs shifting at 5400-5600 on factory tach.

Re: Noise when off the clutch.....only sometimes?
throwout bearing.....when you replace this you might as well replace your clutch/flywheel, etc. since you have to pull the transmission. I am doing this soon to my car, same problem.

Since it is intermittent now do you think I have a few thousand miles till it is needed? If I wait to change it out could I potentially one day have something break and do serious damage? Or would it continually gradually make more and more noise until it would be obvious that it needed changing?
