noise from the rear of my car

everytime i hit a small bump in the road it sounds like i have 100 loose nuts and bolts in my trunk on the passenger side. I cant for the life of me figure out what the noise is. Everything under the car is tight and when i push down on the car while its parked it bounces up and down with no noise at all. I only get this annoying noise when driving. Could it be inside my rearend? any other ideas?

This may sound too simple, but is your spare tire and assorted tools nice and tight?

Possible brake pad retaining clips are broken and the pads are ratteling.
or maybe
Upper or lower shock bushing/bisquit worn away.

mine did that and was the spare tire but since yours isnt there i have no clue

is the hook thing the tire mounts to taken out also? id say yea duh lol but was worth an ask
i guess you could have 100 loose nutts back there lol j/k :P

oh here is a long shot but did similarily happen to me... my story is with an ls1 car rear end but ne ways.. when you got the new springs put on and took the rear end out when putting it back in there are these 2 metal pieces on each side basicly a bent metal bar into a box or triangle or something.. they bolt down (to rear end) holding the brake lines in place but if you dropped the rear end these had to be unhooked maybe you (or whoever) didnt hook em back up.. see i put a diff rear end in my car and i cant remember if it wasnt the same setup or didnt have holes for em but i couldnt mount mine to the rear end so i zip tied em after a few weeks i noticed alot of wierd racket on bumps it was one of those bouncing about back there

if they are not hooked in u should see em dangling from your break lines above the rear end somewhere the culprit on mine managed to work its way down bouncin on the inside lower part of my wheel...

Did you remove the rear seatbelts/retractors?

Tighten your rear control arm nut/bolts. I had this before and the nuts worked loose a little. After putting duct tape all over the hatchback area someone suggested this and it stopped the noise. Eventually had to tighten them with an impact wrench because they kept coming loose. No problems since then, about 60,000 miles ago.

can you elaborate what's "rear control arm"? cos I too have the same problem. In fact mine gives squeaks from all four sides. Any light on this would help. / thanx.

Shown here in yellow (if you are stock they will be black )

...and look more like this

They keep the rear axle located. Typically the bushings begin to squeek - my experience is especially in cold weather. Lots of posts about it. If you are getting the squeek up front too - I would guess your bushings there are getting old also. Doesn't necessarily indicate any type of imminent failure - just aging rubber.

I did the bushings a couple of years ago - but I can already hear some noise creeping back in.

If they loosen they can create a clunking from the rear.

Torque arm on mine gets loose. It will make a rattle noise. I tighten it every 6 months and it better. The center bar between the axle and the transmission.
