Nitrogen bad for summer tires?
Nitrogen bad for summer tires?
hey, we have tire discounters here in cinci (not sure if it's nationwide or not)
they fill up their tires with nitrogen so they stay cooler and stay fuller for longer
my questions is...
i'm getting some kumho 712s and they are a straight summer tire
now...would i be better off having regular air in them?
i know theyre supposed to get hot to stick better and i'm wondering if the nitrogen is gonna hold me back on that part?
any help is appreciated

Re: Nitrogen bad for summer tires?
I don't see how the nitrogen would have any negative effects. Benefits are that it is less prone to leakage and maintains a steady pressure better during seasonal temperature changes.
Just beware that you will not be able to breathe air from any of the tires when you are trapped under water with your car.

let's hope i'm not underwater anytime soon then
i just was wondering if it causes them to not heat up as fast or not stay warm for when i need them
i guess i'll try it out and see if i like it
if not, i'll just deflate and inflate with regular air
it's only a summer car anyways really so i'm not worried about temp changes like in the winter, etc.
that's what the rs is for

yea, it's also the only thing this place fills up tires with afaik also
Re: Nitrogen bad for summer tires?
Nitrogen has been used in all Nascar divisions for years. The pressure doent change when the outside barametric pressure changes. It will increase slightly as the track builds up heat but not like regular airpressure changes with heat. A 1 or even a half pound increase makes alot of difference in the tires stagger when you use Nitrogen for racing

We use dry nitrogen when servicing landing gear struts and bogey positioners on all aircraft. It's nothing new, been around for YEARS.
Nitrogen has all of the qualities mentioned above, plus it doesn't pull in moisture like compressed air does. That's why we use it inside the landing gear struts because otherwise the insides of them would rust.

Well, I'm not sure what the Navy calls us, but I'm an Aircraft Hydraulics Specialist by trade. I do have a couple Nav-Air books for reference material on the C-130 In-Flight Refueling Pod in my classroom.
I enjoy rebuilding/repacking gear struts. Keeps me busy all day.

Re: Nitrogen bad for summer tires?
The nitrogen does not change the amount or speed at which your tire temp. increase. They get just as hot with air as with nitrogen. The main difference is in the rate of expansion between nitrogen and air. Nitrogen expands less per degree of temp. increase than air allowing for more controlled pressure. Plus the other benefits mentioned, nitrogen does not oxidize the interior tire rubber the way air will, particularly under high temp. and pressures.
