Unhappy a Newbie Needs a Little Help

Im about ready to purchase a 89 Pontiac Firebird Formula and i believe its worth its small problems to put slowly back together over time. What do you experts think? Heres the exact email i was sent on the car :-----------------------------------------------------------

Engine, Transmission, and rear are good. Sometimes it
doesn't want to start. I put another battery in that
I had and it started. It's not a new battery. It has
been sitting so I may have to jump it to get it
started again.

Here is more info on the car:

"1989 Formula WS6 350 TPI - 700R4 Transmission located
in Roanoke Tx.

I no longer drive the car due to gas and having
another daily driver. Car has been sitting for the
past few months.

Motor and Trans are strong. Has the 9 bolt rear with
3.73 gears. Fairly new shocks/struts. Aftermarket
shorty headers. Car does not smoke and the SES light
is not on. New radiator, AC Compresor, Condensor, MAF,
Coil, and ignition module are on the car.

AC system still has a leak somewhere. Holds a week
tops before needing recharged. Battery is weak from
sitting for so long. Also needs new swaybar bushings.
Tint is pealing. Interior needs new headliner and
driver side A-piller. Also the driver seat has a
decent sized tear on the bottom sitting area. Other
than that the interior is pretty nice. Also includes a
Alipine CD head unit.

Also since the car has been sitting both of the tags
have gone out. I don't have any plans to drive it
around so I never got new ones put on.

I had forgot to mention that along with the stock in-tank fuel pump... this car also has an external, in-line fuel pump on it as well. No fuse on the in-line pump. Basicly, there shouldn't ever be any fuel issues with this car unless someone really hates you and dumps sugar in there

-----------------------------------------------------------

So...what do the experts think? An email directly to me would be very helpful as i probualey wont find my way back here again. tizjeri@sbcglobal.net

Thanks in advance!

Re: a Newbie Needs a Little Help

I'm by no means an expert, as I've said many times before giving help/advice, but your seller sounds honest for the most part. Except we don't know how many miles are on it? And how much $$ is he asking for it?

I see that you're partial to Email, but I encourage you to keep finding your way back to this forum. It has very knowledgeable and helpful people with good experience with these vehicles. There is also a good, respectful atmosphere on this forum, unlike others. There is even a forum section (3rd Gen / L98 Engine Tech) just for the car you're considering buying.

Re: a Newbie Needs a Little Help

If the price is right, go for it. The WS6 cars are pretty rare in third-gen format. Also, the little problems it has are cheap and easy to fix. When I got my third-gen years ago, a new headliner was one of the first things it needed done, not a big deal. I was actually able to repair it myself. I purchased a big sheet of matching fabric, cut it precisely, applied adhesive to the board, and applied it. It came out perfect and was a cheap and easy fix. Also, a 9 in. rear with 3.73 gears, the dreaded weak factory 10-bolt issue has already been addressed then in that vehicle saving you money in the future.

As long as the body is sound, a grand sounds like a good deal. If you dont buy it, then I might have to add another f-body to my arsenal

Re: a Newbie Needs a Little Help

Haha i already bought it actually. In a few hours im about to go drive it around for a few hours just to get it out of my system. On the 15th the title and everything will be mine. Going from paycheck to paycheck to pay it off here. Your more then welcome to help me tear it apart though. Haha!

And as for the body, its in perfect shape. No dents, no nothing. Nice blue paint. The drivers side interior needs some re-upohlstering though, nice big tear in the seat and the carpet under the peddles looks abused. Otherwise, it looks great.

There are some photos here on my website ; http://thejackbull.com/car/index.html
