New guy here! I bought a new toy!!!

Hello! Since I am new here I thought I'd introduce!

Reason I am here- I bought a 1997 SS/Z28, 6 speed, White, no T-Tops- ALL Stock. It has 80k miles and I bought it for $7950.00. This car was owned by a woman (50 years old) and had it for 68k miles of it's life. As far as I am concerned, the car is perfect. Tan leather/black combination for the interior in flawless shape. SLP adds are the wheels, exhaust (single driver side), trim, etc. Funny, she had run it through the car wash but never cleaned door jams and the engine compartment- it took me forever to clean but looks like new now. I am very happy.

I owned a 1997 WS6 Ram Air Formula, auto, white- practically a show car. My GF totalled it 7 months ago. So, obviously, I have been looking for some sort of replacement.

The car came with brand new ZO6 chome wheels- NOT a fan...but can you believe she kept the original SS rims!!!?? I made out like a bandit!

So! I am having the original SS wheels slightly customized. I am having the first 2 tiers of the rim lip polished and the insides of them as well (leaving the remainder of the rim the 'silver clear coat'. I needed to have the rims 'pop' more- if you understand what I mean- Not shiny enough for me. Also, I am having the car lowered 1 inch (maybe 1.5? I need some help here! ) The car just seems to sit too high....and K&N for now.

I will be inquiring on a 'chip' for a little more power, but other than that, I will be leaving everything else alone.

For those of you who have read this far- Thanks for listening. Excited to be here and to be a part of the Camaro family!

Any recommendations for my new toy? Anything I should get replaced now before it breaks?

THANK YOU! and it is nice to meet you all. BTW- I am in Vegas.

Scott

Forget about the "chip" idea. The LT1 PCM is programmable, and there's really no point in replacing it unless you're building a purpose-built race car. Even then, the stock PCM will suit most purposes just fine.

How much more power would you like? How much do you want to spend?

Well, it's slightly wasteful to tune an otherwise-stock car. At the very least, he should get an exhaust and a CAI before he gets a tune.

Sounds like ideas are conflicting...

I just found out that what I want done to the wheels is gonna cost me $700- So, to answer your question, (lowering the car is gonna cost $650...so it is obviously starting to add up)...I think this is all the $$$ I want to spend right now.

I don't need to make the car go any faster- It is already very fast- Fast enough for me anyway.

I'll post pics as soon as it is done- Wheels and all.

I have not had the car serviced at all since I have aquired it- So I would like to learn more about the LT1 PCM modification(whatever that is-I'm not a wrench guy). and as far as 'tuning'- I am not sure this car needs to be tuned- it runs perfectly- lol...but what do I know?...

Thanks again for the input- I'm all ears!!!

If its flawless and runs perfectly, you don't want it to go faster, and it only has 68k miles...don't touch it, and definitely don't get a chip, tune is not needed either. You should read up on regular and preventative maintanence but as for now, you shouldn't really be expecting alot of problems.

It's not that a tune wouldn't help. I'm just saving you money. You could get 2-3hp out of a dyno tune on a completely stock LT1, but that seems like an awful waste of $500.

We might be able to help save you some money. What kind of wheels and tires are you considering? How far do you want to lower it?

You'll change your mind about that soon enough. It took me about a week before I was itching for more power from my LS1.

Good advice right there.

If it runs good now, the only thing I would do is regular maintenance, like fuel filter, spark plugs, etc. A tune is not really going to help you, and with 80K on it, should run fine for a while. I bought mine with 50K on it, and it ran perfect until I started modding it .

By the way, this site is both a blessing and a curse. Lots of good info, but I'm pretty sure my car would be stock right now if it wasn't for these guys . I kid, I kid.

First thing you need to do is take the car out for a good rip. Yes, open the b!tch up and get rid of all the carbon. (Mine was bought from a 50yr old lady as well) You prolly wanna get a tune up done as well. Enjoy the car

No reason for a dyno tune yet, a mail order tune will do the job at a third of the cost. Ion states on his website that a tune on a stock or bolt-on car can yield gains of 13hp or more.

I'll trade you my older, dirtier Z28 for your SS... IMO, the LT1 SS is the best looking F-body ever to roll on four wheels. Congrats.
