new to the camaro world!!!

Well me and my girlfriend just bought a 1994 z28. And I must say it is awesome. I'm 32 and I have driven a lot of high performance cars, but I really like this one. It has a few problems though....so I'm needing some help if I can get some?? When we first got it, it had 109000 miles on it and has not had a tuneup for 3 years....no oil change nothing... SO...the first thing I did was plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, and oil change. Then on a trip the next day it got cold out and had to turn the heater on...guess what....no heat. Flushed the system and cleaned everything out....blows like a champ. Now when I start it up everything runs fine and about 2 mins later the fans kick on annd the check engine light comes on. I hooked it up to read codes and nothing. I have checked all I know. I'm thinking that it night have something to do with the temp sensor that kicks the fans on....the one on the water pump???? I'm guessing???? It is maybe causing the fans to. Kick on prematurely throwng a code to the computer causing the light to come on.........please help....I'm lost!!!!

If the check engine light comes on, the code is normally stored. Make sure the PCM is not reset before code checking.

The fans come on because the SES light is on. You need a code reader, scan tool, or the appropriate software to pull the codes on the '94 and newer. As shoe said, the code(s) should be stored.

I have hooked it up to the reader and nothing comes up. Like I said it only comes on when the fans kick on, when the fans go off so does the light...I think it might have something to do with the fans, but I have no idea....

What do you mean "nothing comes up"? Does that mean the scanner is not working or there are no codes? Is it a known good OBD-I scanner? As already mentioned, the fans come on because of the code-not the other way around. It would be very peculiar if the codes were not being stored.

Re: new to the camaro world!!!

Fuse #7 iss not blown. The reader that I used is the ones they have at orilley auto. So its a pretty good one as far as I know.....I'm used to working on older cars with no computer...lol. I have used them on other cars and it has given accurate information. I'm kinda at a loss here. Its really not harming anythin just kinda annoying.

Re: new to the camaro world!!!

If you bought the one that sells for $25 to $30, it won't work. It says it will on the packaging, but it won't.

The diagnostic port is on the same circuit as the cig lighter. If the lighter doesn't work, check the fuse.

A 1994 DLC does not have/use a 12v power supply.

Everything in the car works.. I don't get any codes when I hook it up. The service engine light comes on when the fans kick on....then when the fans go off so does the light......

Re: new to the camaro world!!!

First of all welcome! Our 95 formula did the same exact thing. I have to ask my hubby but I think it was something with the A.I.R. causing the ses light to come on and the fans to run. I think there is a fuse u can pull to stop it. It sucks cuz it would drain our battery having those fans run on high constantly. I feel ur pain.
