I was able to get mine out on my '97 Z28 M6. I believe on LT1 auto cars you have to remove the y pipe, so I'm assuming you will to. It was a PITA to get the starter out without removing the y pipe. I'd pick up some PB Blaster and unbolt your Y pipe.
I just replaced the starter on my 1994 Z28 with the 5.7 and did not remove the Y-pipe. I simply removed the bell housing and unhooked the trans lines at the radiator and the return line next to it then unhooked the bracket holding them to the engine. When I did this the trans lines moved out of the way with a little tug.
