Question Muffler Question - Crossflow vs. Single In/Out

Just curious, why do so many people run the crossflow muffler when it seems the single in/out design is more efficient (i.e. mufflex) and all the faster F-Bodies use it. I actually prefer using the single in/out with a hidden tailpipe instead of the big polished dual ones hangin' out. Does everyone just like having the dual outlets that much? Has anyone actually measured the hp difference between the two? I know if you have a cutout it doesn't matter, but at street legal drag racing events you need a full exhaust.

Yeah, i guess if you have cutouts in the rear valance i can understand, my GTP has them, but it also has dual mufflers.

Wow, that is weird that you brought that up because I'm actually in the middle of doing something like that. The other day I took the saw to the cheesy 31/2" chrome tips, now you can't see anything.

So is Mufflex the brand or what? As far as flow?

I'm going to cut it back to after cat and put a single in/out w/a turn down. Not sure on what kind probably what ever flows the best. I like it better with no exhaust out the back I think it cleans it up. The oly turn off I have noticed so far is that the exhaust hangs around when sitting.

Mufflex was just an example...they design the pipes but use other companies' mufflers (Flowmaster, Spintech, etc.). I don't know which manufacturer's single in/out flows best, but anything's better than a crossflow.

Re: Muffler Question - Crossflow vs. Single In/Out

When I was talking to local performance and exhaust shops around me when I was considering getting a whole new exahsut system for my car (I still am actually, but I'm tight on funds right now) They suggested staying away from a cross-flow application. I have one right now, and although I like the sound and looks of it, I can see how it would be in-efficient.

They told me an optimium set-up would be to get some full-length headers with 3" collectors, a 3" y-pipe, into a 3" hi-flow cat, and then from there on they suggested going with the slp set-up for 3rd gens, because it is one of the best flowing exhausts for our car out there and it sounds good. They also mentioned to make sure it's ALL mandrel bent and NOT crush bent.
