Metal Rattling sound under car?

Hey guys:

I have this metal rattle I hear from the middle on the car just off of idle or when the car is in load.

I thought it was just a heat sheild casue that is what it sounds like and it only happens between 1000-1200 RPM just as I start moving, either in 1st or 2nd gear. It does not happen at all if the car is standing still and I blip the throtle, but the second I start rolling I hear this sound. I've had the car for 5 years so I know it is not the stanard drive line chatter.

If it helps, I do have a Borla cat back on the car.

Thanks,
Asim

I had something similar, turned out it was my cat - something inside was rattling, got rid of entire cat and it was gone. But mine was 9 years old.
If your is also old enough you may think of buying new one (CarSounds are good, 60$ at the Ebay, 3").

My Y-pipe rattles minutely at the same point, just off idle. I figure its because there is no hanger along the entire length of my exhaust except for the 2 hangers by the muffler. Looks like you dont have a custom y-pipe though.

Could be the shield on the bottom of the cat. Check the factory driveshaft strap also. I bent mine bottoming out on a friend's driveway and it did the same thing. BTW, the heat shield above the cat is a weird thing. You might want to double check it.

This sounds exactly like what i had happen to me. Open your hood and have someone step on the gas while you listen. If the sound is coming from somewhere near the engine your engine just might be knocking.

Thats what happened to me so im about to order my 383

I've just had the same thing happen to me that you're asking about. Took it into the dealer...long story there..however, turned out to be that the passenger side cat **** itself, and was rattlin' around... I had also looked into my tailpipe (when the car wasn't running) : ) and saw pieces of the catalyst there...good luck

Once it was the clamp from the catback to the Y-pipe and the other time it was the exhaust hitting the crossmember at the back of the tranny. (Not the tranny crossmember)

So basically I'm on a wild goose chase. Any other experienes or tips would be great.

Like I say, I can't duplicate the problem with the car standing still, but as soon as I start even rolling and give the gas I hear the noise.

Thanks,
Asim

I bet its ur crossmember, I had to bend mine slightly so it would not touch my exhaust. Thats one thing that many people have to adjust when they get an aftermarket cat-back. Check it out...u should be able to get under there with a light and see if it looks like it could be touching. Plus if it is vibrating there...u will see little markings in the exhaust piping from where it touches...its imparitive that u get that fixed

I had a strange vibration exactly like he described for a while coming from the cat area. (When I had a single cat) It turned out to be the heatshield welds had broken in a few spots and was vibrating. I was hard to tell looking at it because when it would cool down you could hardly tell they were broken, then when it heated up it would come loose again.
