LT1 vs LS1

Hey gentlemen, I'm replacing my 6 with an 8 pretty soon, and it seems I have access to both an lt1 and an ls1. I'm more into a good exhaust sound than I am speed, which one would be better for that? What are some of the dis/advantages of each engine such as longevity?

They are worth more than your car. I can roll them down a hill and they would beat your car in a race. They are called wheels. I'd take the wheels over your car. Aparently your only capaple of commenting on appearence and have no useful knowledge. Leave the thread if your that ignorant.

Your the one who bought a six and is asking which motor to pick for "Exhaust sound"

Your V6 should sound great if you replace the muffler bearings

What, is your car just an engine? I said the car. I don't care about the output of the engine yeah I said I want sound.

Sound is pretty subjective and varies more on your exhaust then your engine. Headers into an X-pipe with dumps will be louder then... most anything on the road, period.

It just seems that most of the comparitive threads I've read say the lt1 sounds "better". Something to do with the firing order or positioning of the engine.

It's an iron block. The LS1 is an aluminum block, and tends to sound more hollow and a bit more raspy. The LS1 however, is a superior motor

Ok, it seems the thread is going to stay on topic?

I have to agree that stock for stock, an LT1 has a more "traditional" SBC (small block Chevy) sound to them, and with just a cat-back exhaust or even just a muffler, they sound awesome. However, I put a Flowmaster cat-back on my LS1, and the sound of it is pretty good, and comparing engine for engine, the LS1 is leaps and bounds beyond the LT1 technology and performance wise.

If you've got a line on either engine and it's within your budget, I'd have to say go for the LS1. You can do an exhaust system to make them sound good, and with ~350 HP bone stock, they have lots of power potential too.

Also, I'm just noticing that your car is a '99, so I think the swap to an LS1 should be easier since that's the motor intended to be in a '99, whereas the LT1 was designed to bolt into the '93 - '97 cars.

The LS1 is underrated. I see most LS1s dynoing close to 300RWHP and LT1s dynoing close to 250RWHP.

As for the topic starter, I ran my LS1 with open headers the other day and it sounded real nice IMO. I personally would go with a LS1 and a cut out.

The best advice I can give you is to use the search feature and drive both an LT1 and an LS1. Those were the best two things I did when picking a fourth gen.

I have a 3" catback and a cut out on my LS1, along with LTs, and it sounds F*CKING BEAUTIFUL! Stock for stock an LT1 sounds better though.
