LT1 or LS1?

I am in a dilemma, I have had my eye set on a 98 Z28 with the LS1 in it for 7800, but today i found a 94 Z28 with the LT1 that i could get for a lil less than 5 grand. The 98 has about 74k while the 94 has 79k on it. The rest is the same with both, autos not t-tops ect. Now I dont know what to do. Should i take out a big loan for the 98 or take out like a grand for the 94. What im tryin to get at is, is the LT1 worth saving the couple grand. Can i get the power im looking for out of one of those.

What are your plans for the car. Heavily modified, leave it stock, a few bolt ons.

With enough money you can make all the power you want out of either motor. For the $2800 difference you could outrun some ls1 cars. It just depends on how much you have to spend after you buy.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

I have always been a firm believer in avoiding car payments when at all possible.

It sounds like it is possible for you. I'd get the LT1 car and see if my tax return is enough to cover most of the remaining grand. You could float that extra $1000 on a credit card for a month until you have your return.

No car payment = more financial security and more money for mods.
Plus, it feels great to drive a nice car and know you own it outright.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

get the lt1 and a NX wet n2o kit with about $800 the money you save

i had that on my 95 trans am everything else was stock with a 100 shot and a six speed i was running a 8.4-8.5 1/8th mile most stock ls1's are running 8.9-8.8's but that is bone stock

the n2o will put you on the same page as them

just my 2 cents

I was mostly going to do Bolt-on mods and some computer work with changing the gears. Nothing really big because I have to be able to drive this most of the time due to my only other transportation is a crotch rocket.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

If I had throw numbers out there, I'd say the bolt on LS1 will probably make ~30-40rwhp more than a LT1 similarly modded. It'll probably run a half second quicker and trap ~3-5 mph faster as well. The LS1 also has better brakes than the LT1 car.

I'd say get the best you can afford. Like someone else had mentioned, I too would rather not have a car payment... unless I was just in love with the LS1 looks/interior.

LT1

It's cheaper, not far behind the LS1, and it just looks cooler.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

In all seriousness I had a 00 supersport camaro and a 94 z28. The z28 was very highly modded with cam, heads, gears, ect. It took all that to even come close to the Ls1. Then once the cam went in the Ls1 there was NO possible way for the Lt1 to stand a chance unless you want to spend big money. Plus the Ls1 gets way better gas mileage! I have had a 94 z28 and a 96 trans am and a 92 vette six speed. The Ls1 is far superior

Re: LT1 or LS1?

I'd go for the LS1 MAINLY because it is newer. OBD2 is far superior for diagnostics and you said you only planned on small mods so you may as well have the OBD2 computer. I've owned both a LT1 and LS1, both were reliable cars and you can't really go wrong with either. If it was up to me I'd go for the LS1 though.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

Normally I'd tell you to get the LT1... but in this case go with the LS1. '94 is getting really old now, so with that many years under its belt no matter what kind of milage it has a higher risk of breaking down than the '98. The LS1 will be faster, even though they look like chryslers.. .

If it was the same car, same price, etc.. I'd go with an LT1 engine mainly because of the low end tq, and they always seem to sound meaner...where as the LS1 has "quieter" power, I guess.
