Re: lt1

The LS1 is in the "Gen-III" SBC (small block Chevy) family. An LT1 is a Gen-II SBC. They share pretty much NO parts with each other, other than a couple similar dimensions (cylinder bore centers, 90* "V" block).

The head design of LS1's gives them their biggest advantage over LT1's. Stock vs stock, an LS1 makes around ~350 HP at the flywheel, while an LT1 is (correct me if I'm wrong LT1 guys) about ~275 - 285 HP. However I think LT1's may have been under-rated by GM the same as the LS1 was (LS1's were "rated" at 305 - 310 HP ) so the LT1 may in fact be around ~300 HP?

Anyway, the LT1's always have to play "catch-up" to the LS1's. Mod for mod (whether it's cam, headers, intake) an LS1 responds that much better than an LT1, and it really comes down to the heads/intake that keep the LS1 out front.

However, LT1's are great motors, don't get me wrong. There is a ton of aftermarket for both platforms, and with a good set of heads on the LT1, they can run with or beyond a modded LS1. Also, factor in that the cost of an LT1 F-body will be significantly less than an LS1 F-body (just due to the age) then that leaves you more money to mod them.

BUT, you will need to mod them if you want to keep up to an LS1. BUT, if you're happy with the performance of the LT1 (which are NOT slow cars by any means ..... they're at least ~mid 14-second cars, and some guys run them into the mid to upper 13's stock!). LS1's on average are ~mid 13-second cars, while some can run on the verge of 12's with nothing more than sticky tires and good driving.
