low MPG and gas smell

With the cost of gas as high as it is, i think i should look into where my gas smell and low miles per gallon are comming from.

Its my 1996 SS vert, with 49k miles on it. all stock. i'm getting around 10 mpg or so. the car runs perfect, but once in a while i can smell gas fumes. it doesnt look like its leaking from anywhere. Ive read about the canister behind the driver side rear wheel.

What else can i check or replace to better my mpg? I think my 97 SS actually gets better mpg and its not stock.

Are there hoses comming from the tank or canister that dont go anywhere? that pull in air or anything? maybe one of the lines going from the tank to the canister came off??

Looks like im going to pull the plastic cover off and check into it,

let it sit for a day or two, have someone watch the exhaust tips, start the car, and give her a few revs, have the person watching the exhaust tips watch for any black smoke

i tell you to do this, because then you'll find out if your car is running rich or if its related to something else

the FPR might be leaking

I had one like that on a sunfire.. the thing stared leaking but the car ran fine, just had horrible gas mileage and a smell of gas every now and then.

Good thing to check; pull the vacuum line off the FPR and see if fuel drips out. There shouldn't be any fuel in the vacuum line.
