Loud screeching sound when turning left?

Ever since i have owned my 95 Z28 (a little over a year now) if I am going around 15-20 MPH and do a pretty sharp left hand turn, such as an onramp or something i get a very lud screeching sound coming from my rear left wheel area. I thought something was just messed up with my car but my buddy's 96 Z28 does it also! Anyone else have this problem and what is causing it? Oh yeah I also noticed that when it is screeching if i tap the brakes it wont do it anymore....

Re: Loud screeching sound when turning left?

It is something in the caliper, rotor, or pads back there. Mine also does this on the pass. side, with right turn. Been trying to figure it out for a while, but I do have it down to those pieces for sure. I'm thinking it just may be some movement in the caliper/pad for some reason?? I have just learned to slow down.

Re: Loud screeching sound when turning left?

have you checked for play in the axle? a worn c clip would allow for more slop causing the caliper to hit.

This is definitely not normal, I've had 3 different f-bodies and none of them did this. One thing you might check for, there is a little "lip" of metal in the rear wheel well that can get bent up and contact the inside of the wheel. I had this happen once after an off at the roadcourse and it made a sound similar to what you are describing.

Chalk up another one on the board. I too have had this ever since I had rear brake work done. Please let me know if you find out how to fix this...

96k -

after reading that diagnostic page- i think it is the spacer issue- cause when i brake it stops - have to try that fri when my new rims and tires come in

Re: Loud screeching sound when turning left?

I have the same problem guys and i got a 3.8 V6. I got new rear rotors and pads put on at a shop and ever since i get a bad screeching sound when i make a left turn at that speed. I told them about it and they said it was the pad and it seemed to fix it for about a day but it still does it. Not as bad as it did at first but its definitely still there. I've just learned to slow down a bit on those turns. I'm not and F1 racer or anything so i'm not going to let it bother me.

Re: Loud screeching sound when turning left?

I too have this problem and I am 100% sure that it's brake related and caused my axle movement.

After doing a brake job on my 95 Z, it started and I could notice that the caliper had less clearance against the rotor than it did on th other side and the noise only happened when the body weight shifted to that side.

I have yet to change the c-clips but I also wonder if putting cheap rotors will make a difference, they may not sit against the hub with the same offset as some better brands but we all try to save some money, right?

If anyone has had this a rectified the problem, please chime in.

Re: Loud screeching sound when turning left?

Mine happened after a brake job also. That was about 75k at the time. I now have 111k and have been thru another set of pads since. Just dealt with turns not so fast. I'm amazed at how common this is.

I've got 95 k but a 4.10 geard rear end with maybe 10k on it...

Installed new CHEAPO rotors and raybesto's pads...

Squeek here and there now....

I live with it...

I've tried greasin the pins, die griinding a bit off the caliper bracket...

Nothing worked...

I now live with it....

AHHH fbodies....
