Keyless entry remote

Oh ****, another obviously answered question by using search, right? Nope . Actually, search is what got me here in the first place. I have a '95, with factory keyless entry, and for a couple months now the batteries have been getting kind of low, it works *SOMETIMES*, very low distance, etc.

So I take it to autozone, because I read somewhere they sell replacement remotes, and I talk to the guy who probably had no clue what he was talking about. He told me as soon as I mess with anything in that remote (change the battery), or get a new one, the entire car'll need to get reprogrammed or it'll fry the computer or something like that.

So I go here and decide I'm going to change out the batteries, and reprogram the remote. I do the ignition off-to-on 3 times, and no dice. Maybe it already did it, but just didn't work right, so I hold down the lock and unlock buttons for "up to 16 seconds", during which the doors actually locked OR unlocked, because I pushed the button.

Well, reading later, it turns out (lucky me) in 95 that wasn't how you do it, you need to paper clip this #4 and #8 thing. I did that, but now the remotes showing absolutely no signs of life. I'll most likely have to take it to the dealership and get this fixed, but I was thinking might as well post here and see if anyone has any suggestions. I'm also considering buying one on ebay, but wouldn't that be in the same state as mine is right now? Thanks in advance, sorry this was so long..

Re: Keyless entry remote

I replaced the battery in my remote and it worked fine after that, except at farther distances. However, it has never worked at further distances, it only works when you are really close to the car. I wouldnt see why the computer would need to be reprogramed if you just have to change the battery.

So, you replaced the batteries in the remote? Did you clean the buttons? You should not have to reprogram for a remote that you were already using, but you can try the programming again if you want to.

Re: Keyless entry remote

Its never worked great at far distances, but at one point I had to hold it directly up against the door and keep pushing for it to work. I "reprogrammed" the remote '96 style, holding the two buttons at the same time, which seemed to "reset" the remote, but now it seems like the cars code doesn't want to get thru. I also cleaned the buttons, but I didn't put too much detail into it, I'll try to clean them again.

It worked when I originally tried to reprogram it, by holding the two buttons, because whichever one was hit first worked, I heard the doors lock or unlock.
