Welp, I finally gave in and picked up a 97 SS M6. The car has 64K miles on it and is in great shape. I am new to the LT1 world and could certainly use some guidance and help on my new purchase!

- Car is an SS. How do I tell the build #? For example, car # X,XXX out of X,XXX.

- The rims have some bubbling going on and I plan on refurbishing them as a winter project. I like the stock painted look so I was planning on just having them stripped down and painted. Would I be better off going with an exchange? Any companies out there do a straight up exchange for stock wheels?

- I plan on just crusing around in the car. I really don't want to do any major modifications to it performance wise or cosmetics wise. That being said, does anyone recomend anything cool to do??

- When I hit a bump, there is a single knocking noise coming from the rear deck lid. Is this common? Could it be anything else besides the deck lid?

I don't know much about refinishing wheels, but as cheap as you can buy a set like you have from TomZwheels, I would go that route. And while you're at it, upgrade to 17x11s in the back. You'll love new stance while keeping close to the factory appearance. You should be able to buy a set of 2 17x9 fronts and 2 17x11 rear for <$500

As for the build number on your car, Call SLP directly and have your VIN number ready

 

If your asking about the SLP build number, I "believe" you can still get it by calling them with your VIN. If the previous owner was a member of SSOA(Super Sports Owners Association): http://www.camarossoa.org/ , they may have it already. Also you can get some good info. off the SSOA forum/board: http://www.chirpthird.com/ .

 

Cool. I have delt with SLP a few times and they are all cool folks. I looked at TomZwheels and did not find any ZR1 wheels. Would 11 inch rims fit in the back of that car?

I will check the site out, but I dont' belive the previous owner was an enthousiast. He was some rich guy out in the Hamptons of LI that was more interested in Porsches and Ferraris.

Have you checked the passenger side door SLP sticker? That should have the SLP # ... ?not sure if you already new that ?

 

I looked at the sticker but did't see anything to the nature of a build #. What should I be looking for?

Yes, but its a tight squeeze, usually involves a bit of hammering on the wheel wells for clearance and an adjustable panhard bar (the suspension piece that runs from the frame on the passenger side to the axle on the driver side) to precisely center the axle and eliminate the flex of the stock panhard.

As for fun things to do... You could change the wheels I agree with the 17x11's if they fit, and also you could lower the car to give it a more agressive stance and improve the handling as well. You would need new shocks and springs as well as lower control arm relocation brackets and an adjustable panhard rod as mentioned above to re-center the rear of the car for the wider wheels and lower stance. A front shock tower brace is also inexpensive and easy to install and from what I've heard improves handing although you will need one specifically made for 96-97 SS since you have the SS airbox in that location. Also aftermarket front and rear sway bars I heard will help handling significantly but I think the SS came with bigger sway bars from the factory I'm not sure on that though.

Also I can't tell from the interior picture what type of shifter you have but if you are not comfortable with the shifter that is one of the first things I'do do in a 6-speed (although I think the SS cars come with the hurst right? In that case maybe just a shorter stick)
