just bought a '97 Trans-Am .. have a few questions

this makes my 5th fbody (4 which were LT1s) and i just got this beautiful '97 Black TA yesterday. its an M6 and i was curious as to do all M6s come with the skip shift feature? this car doesnt have it and i was wondering if you think mabye the previous owner may have deleted it out or some have it and some dont? this is my 1st M6. my previous Z28 was tuned for a 160 t-stat and operated right around 170-175 all the time. this car operates at the same temp. think someone may have programmed this car? it has a TCS button under the radio and when i click it no light appears or anything. i'm assuming this is Traction Control, right? i'm use to the ASR initals on Camaros. well, this car will spin like its on wet road all the time. looked under the hood and found the TC box (big black box next to fuel rail, right?) and it all seems to be hooked up, but why does the button not work? seems as if whomever had it last wanted a simple bolt on car. it has also been lowered 1 3/4 inches all the way around. has a cold air kit and i found that they did a TB Bypass. i wish they'd left a not or something telling me if it were programmed or not. i hate trying to guess. what do you guys think? considering all the simple bolt ons, i think it has been programmed...but do you? can you delete the skip shift feature with a HPP or do you have to install the module? sorry for all the ?s, but i'm just trying to get to know my new car a little better.

As far as I know, all M6 cars came equipped with skip shift, but somebody removed it.

What comes to the traction control, maybe the switch has been reversed. SLP sells, or at least sold, a module which reverses the operation.

Sounds like somebody has been modding the car. Hopefully it hasn't been beat on too much...

it could have been programmed.

for the car to run at 170 deg or so you don't neccessarily need a reprogram. my 96lt1 use to run at that temp around town and on the highway. so it probably is just the lower stat. watch the fans and see when they come on.

if it has the button for the traction control it obviously had it...not sure why the button isn't working. be thankfull it isn't stuck in the ON position.

all m6 (maybe not 93) came with the skip shift. so it's either programmed out or has the module. check on the side of the trans see if it's unplugged
maybe this pic will help

If you open up the thermostat housing and there is "MotoRad" stamped on the thermostat, it's a 160.

Re: just bought a '97 Trans-Am .. have a few questions

well, after i installed the 160 t-stat in my previous Z28 and had it tuned it always ran around 175. this car operates at the exact same temp, so i figure it has a 160 t-stat in it as well. the car does awesome though. shifts very smooth, no ticking in the motor, very clean under the hood. i got a good car, just would like to know exactly what has been upgraded on it. thanks for the replies!

You cant delete the skip shift w/ the Hpp....Id check the rev limiter and see if its still at 5800(been awhile but I think thats the LT1), if its not theres a good chance it is...Seems like he knew what was going on, if so he might have known the hpp is pretty useless on the m6 car

checked the revs and the limiter still hadn't kicked in at 6000. didnt want to run it past that. i guess i can say that this car has has all the simple features tweaked. CAGS, TB Bypass, Rev Limiter, etc... i was looking at the plug wires and they're a bright red color so they have been changed as well. guess its had a tune up. its an awesome car though and it seems that it'll last me a long time. thanks again for all the replies.
